(NNPA) – Protesters from a Niger Delta village have forced Shell to close a major oil-pumping facility and have demanded the firm keep its promise to rebuild a road that links their village to the outside world, residents said recently.

More than 200 protesters from Opherin village besieged Shell’s station near Erhiemu recently to protest their poverty despite living in an oil-rich area.

The facility has the capacity to pump 100,000 barrels daily from 24 oil wells. Eyewitnesses said the protest had forced it to shut down.

Aggrieved land owners battling the Shell Petroleum Develo-pment Company (SP-DC) over expired land leases have handed down yet another 10-day ultimatum to the multi-national oil firm to make payments on the land or face mass action from some 92 communities.

A review prepared by an outside law firm found that some unidentified employees had used methods that were “aggressive and at times unsupportable” to book proven reserves.

Houston-based El Paso slashed its proven oil and gas reserves by 41% in February, weeks after Shell cut its reserves. The US attorney’s office and the securities and exchange commission are continuing investigations into El Paso.

Troubled oil group Shell intends “to establish a material and enduring presence in Iraq” in an attempt to rebuild the firm’s depleted reserves and foster the long term future of the country’s energy sector.

The vote of confidence from Shell, which is embroiled in controversy over exaggeration of its oil reserves, came after rival BP expressed disillusionment with Iraq’s prospects. BP chief executive Lord Browne said last week that private firms might not have a role to play there.
