Posted 6 Sept 04

Shell Malaysia’s Jintan gas field, located about 275km northwest of Bintulu, came on-stream on Aug 31.

“Jintan is the second gas field brought into production, following Serai which came on-stream in June 2004, under the SK8 production sharing contract, offshore Sarawak,” said Shell Malaysia chairman Jon Chadwick.

The participants in the production-sharing contract are the operator, Shell Oil & Gas Malaysia (37.5%), Nippon Oil Explorations (Sarawak) Ltd (37.5%) and Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd (25%). read more

Business Standard (India): Shell, Caltex move govt on LPG subsidy

Multinationals Shell, Caltex and SHV Energy have petitioned the government to provide them subsidy on liquefied petroleum gas sold by them in India.

This has prompted the petroleum ministry to approach the finance ministry for passing the subsidy on cooking gas to the private players as well.

At present, the government provides a subsidy of around Rs 25 for every cylinder of cooking gas sold to households.

“We have sought the finance ministry’s clearance for passing on the benefits to the private players,” a petroleum ministry official said. read more

“Basic moral standards whether learnt from the Sacred Scriptures or even enshrined in a corporate code of conduct, provide an ethical framework from which we depart at our peril. Honesty, integrity, transparency and respect for each other – our family members, work colleagues, friends, business investors and fellow citizens of this crowded planet, are all absolutely vital ingredients if the human species is to survive in a civilised form.”

A REPLY TO “RACHEL”

Dear Rachel,

I would certainly not use Sacred Scriptures – The Word – to sanctify or excuse man’s ungodly behaviour, whether in our private lives or in the commercial arena. If we choose to do so, we will corrupt and corrode the pivotal anchor in our lives with respect to the subject of righteousness – a very serious matter that will surely destroy the very fabric of our society.

This is where we Malaysians understand and accommodate one another very well – creating harmony through knowing and respecting racial, religious and cultural sensitivities in a country blessed with such rich history and heritage. read more

Discoveries push £2.4bn Cairn into FTSE 100

The Times: Discoveries push £2.4bn Cairn into FTSE 100

“…it will also seal the humiliation of an already shamed Shell”

By Nick Hasell

September 06, 2004

CAIRN Energy is set to secure a place in the FTSE 100 for the first time in this week’s quarterly index reshuffle after four significant oil discoveries in India this year triggered a near-fourfold rise in its shares.

Elevation to the benchmark index will mark a triumph for Bill Gammell, chief executive of the Scottish oil and gas explorer, who boasts a close friendship with US President George Bush and a school acquaintance with Tony Blair. But it will also seal the humiliation of an already shamed Shell, which originally owned 50 per cent of the strike-rich property in Rajasthan that is the basis of Cairn’s current £2.4 billion stock market valuation. read more

TMT boom behind step up to respectability

Financial Times: TMT boom behind step up to respectability

“But the recent history of some corporations – think Shell, Marks and Spencer and Hollinger – shows only how things should not be done.”

Aim has proved so successful that it is now seen as an extension of the main market.

But it has not always been so respectable. Andrew Buchanan, of Close Beacon Investment Trust, reminds me that this newspaper illustrated an early report on Aim with a cartoon of a cowboy on a bucking bronco. You had to be a bit of a maverick to back it.

Mr Buchanan is celebrating his 10th anniversary as the fund manager of the Beacon Investment Trust. That makes the fund a year older than Aim itself, and it claims to have been one of the driving forces behind the creation of the junior market following the stock exchange’s abolition of rule 4.2. read more
