Bandar Seri Begawan – Eleven Marine Cadet Officers received certificates of completion after a three year training course, while six new marine cadets signed contracts to join Brunei Shell Tanker Sdn Bhd during a convocation ceremony for the `Marine Cadet Officers Class of 2001′ and a contract signing ceremony for `Marine Cadet Intake 2005.’

The ceremony took place at the JPCC Royal Berkshire Hall on Friday.

Organised by Brunei Gas Carriers Sdn Bhd and Brunei Shell Tankers Sdn Bhd (BST), the event was graced by guest of honour cum Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Pehin Orang Kaya Johan Pahlawan Dato Paduka Awg Hj Adanan bin Begawan Pehin Siraja Khatib Dato Seri Awg Hj Mohd Yusof.

Also in attendance were Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Setia Dato Paduka Hj Abdul Rahman bin Hj Ibrahim, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Brunei Shell Tankers Sdn Bhd, Brunei Gas Carriers Sdn Bhd (BGC), senior government officials and representatives of oil and gas companies.

In his opening remark, the guest of honour said, “Brunei Shell Carriers will continuously endeavour to produce more qualified and skilled locals in management and operations.”

“To this end, the Brunei Shell Tankers and ABADI ship crew – through efforts by the Shell International Trading and Shipping Company Limited – are hoped to be totally manned by locals in 2007,” added the Deputy Minister of Home Affairs.

The long-term strategy is in line with the aspiration ofHis Majesty’s government in realising and encouraging more involvement by locals in the private sectors, including the oil and gas industry.

Following the speech, the guest of honour presented certificates to the 11 marine officers who completed their academic and vocational training at the Warsash Maritime Centre in UK.

One of the Marine Officer, Awg Muhammad Zulhilmi bin Awg Matassim, was awarded the `Best National Vocational Qualification, NVQ Engineering Portfolio.’

This prestigious annual award is given by the Maritime Society of the UK for the best overall achievement by students in their studies. The `Best NVQ Portfolio’ has been awarded to Bruneians for two consecutive years.

The guest of honour also witness the signing of contracts between six new cadets and Brunei Shell Tankers Sdn Bhd, who was represented by its Managing Director Marcel Luitjen and Shell Ship Management Limited Project Manager Alan Chivers.

The six new cadets are Awg Muhd Alissyabirin bin Hj Mohd, Awg Cheong Mun Khiong, Awg Nurukanwar bin Hj Blajih, Awg Sukri Ehsan bin Ali, Awg Amirul Fadli bin Amir Abas andAwg Qamarul Azmi bin Sulaiman. — Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
