MosNews (Russia): EBRD Delays Loan to Sakhalin-2 Oil Project Due to Environmental Concerns

21 June 2005

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has delayed the approval of a key loan to Royal Dutch/Shell’s Sakhalin-2 oil and gas project in Russia’s Far East. The reason for the delay is the environmental concerns raised by various groups inside and outside of Russia.

“It’s going slower than expected and we have identified some problems. We’ve raised them with Sakhalin Energy [company which operates the project] and we’re discussing the solutions,” an EBRD spokeswoman, quoted by Reuters, said on Monday, June 20. “We were anticipating going into public consultation on it [the loan] in early summer if all the boxes had been ticked but the timing for that has slipped and we can’t say when we expect when to go to the next phase,” the spokeswoman added. read more

MarketWatch: Royal Dutch/Shell Group faces local lawsuit over Nigeria gas flaring

By MarketWatch

LONDON (MarketWatch) — Communities in Nigeria’s Niger Delta are suing Royal Dutch/Shell Group (RD, SC) and its partners in a local court after the company said it would continue gas flaring beyond a legal deadline, the non-governmental organization Friends of Earth said Monday.

Gas flaring is the highly polluting process of burning off natural gas trapped in crude oil.

In a statement, Friends of Earth said last month Shell had announced it would continue flaring until 2009, a year beyond a deadline set by the Nigerian government. read more

Irish Independent: Jail me, says gas pipeline protester

Tuesday 21 June 2005

A FARMER has vowed to go to jail rather than let oil giant Shell build a pipeline through his land.

Willie Corduff said yesterday that people in Rosport, Co Mayo, were being told by Shell, Statoil and Marathon – the three companies that have formed a consortium to take gas inland from the Corrib field – that they were safe.

“They are proposing to lay a high-pressure gas pipeline in bogland – something that has never been tried before – and to build the refinery on bogland,” Mr Corduff said. read more

Asia Pulse: SAUDI ARAMCO TO LIFT SHOWA SHELL STAKE TO 15%

Asia Pulse: SAUDI ARAMCO TO LIFT SHOWA SHELL STAKE TO 15%

21 June 2005

TOKYO, June 21 Asia Pulse – Showa Shell Sekiyu KK (TSE:5002) will as early as Tuesday accept a contract with Saudi Arabian Oil Co., known as Saudi Aramco, that raises the Middle Eastern state-owned firm’s interest from 10 per cent to 15 per cent.

Through the increase, Saudi Arabia aims to bolster its ties with Japan, the biggest purchaser of its crude oil. The stronger relationship will also enable Showa Shell to procure oil more securely than competitors.

Last year, Saudi Aramco bought a Showa Shell stake of about 10 per cent from the Royal Dutch/Shell Group, which owned half of the Japanese firm. Since then, the Saudi company had intended to buy an additional interest of 5 per cent this fiscal year to hike its ownership to 15 per cent. read more

Shell and its partners yesterday found themselves facing a legal suit from local rural communities and western environmentalists over allegations of causing pollution and global warming by flaring gas in Nigeria.

The case – designed to highlight the issue ahead of next month’s G8 summit on Africa and climate change – was lodged in the federal high court of Nigeria in Benin City by the Gbarain and other communities.

Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace and the World Wildlife Fund are supporting the move which came with a new 35-page report: “Gas flaring in Nigeria: a human rights, environmental and economic monstrosity.” read more

The Independent (UK): Opec supplies may increase as oil nudges $60

The Independent (UK): Opec supplies may increase as oil nudges $60

By Philip Thornton, Economics Correspondent

21 June 2005

Oil prices broke new records on both sides of the Atlantic yesterday, prompting Opec to announce it would begin talks about a further increase in supply.

The price of crude came close to hitting the psychological $60-a-barrel mark yesterday after breaking through $59 in New York.

Analysts said fears over a shortage of supply capacity were exacerbated by an outbreak of political turmoil in Nigeria, a major oil producing nation.

In New York prices closed at a record $59.37 a barrel, up 90 cents. In London Brent futures were up 56 cents at $58.32, having hit a fresh peak of $58.58. Prices looked set to break through $60 as contracts for delivery in the final four months of the year, when cold weather boosts demand, were trading above that level. read more

A group of landowners in north Mayo has vowed to go to jail rather than let Shell E&P Ireland build an onshore pipeline for its Corrib gas field through their properties.

The group, which has defied a High Court injunction prohibiting it from interfering with the company’s preparatory work for the pipeline, came to Dublin yesterday to picket Shell’s Irish headquarters.

“I’ll go to jail if I have to. We’ll fight for years for justice, just like the McBreartys,” one of the landowners, Willie Corduff, told a press conference in Dublin. read more

THE TIMES (City diary): Hostile domain

THE TIMES (City diary): Hostile domain

By Martin Waller

June 21, 2005

ROYAL DUTCH/SHELL is locked in a dispute with an 88-year-old war veteran who saw action in the Burma campaign and now runs a website, http://royaldutchshellplc.com, that publishes material critical of the oil company.

The roots of the row between Shell and Alfred Donovan go back to the early 1990s and have to do with earlier marketing campaigns. Mr Donovan and his son John say they do not want money for the site, which Shell unaccountably failed to register.

But they will not hand over the rights to the domain name until the company “gets rid of the management” responsible for its various woes, notably last year’s reserves scandal. (I thought they had.) Shell is going to the Geneva-based arbiter of such disputes next month to try to strip the Donovans of the right to the name. read more

Friends of the Earth: Communities Sue Shell to Stop Nigerian Gas Flaring

Posted 21 June 2005

LAGOS, NIGERIA/London, UK, 20th June 2005 – Communities from across the Niger Delta, with the support of Environmental Rights Action/Friends of the Earth Nigeria (ERA), have today filed a legal action against the Nigerian government, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation and the Shell, Exxon, Chevron, Total and Agip joint venture companies to stop gas flaring.

More gas is flared in Nigeria than anywhere else in the world, and flaring in the country has contributed more greenhouse gas emissions than all other sources in sub-Saharan Africa combined according to the World Bank. read more
