The Guardian (UK): British creators unveil eco-car

“On Thursday, the Ech2o will make a shorter journey to try to break the world fuel efficiency record. Jack Dex, 13, of Southam College, Warwickshire, will drive the prototype at the Shell Eco Marathon…”

A car that can travel on less electricity than it takes to power a lightbulb was unveiled by its British creators today.

The gas company BOC said the hydrogen-powered Ech2o car needed the input of 25W for a 25,000-mile global trip. This is the energy equivalent of less than two gallons of petrol. Emissions would consist of water. But with a top speed of 30mph, the journey would take more than a month, even if the car was driven flat out. read more

Irish Emigrant: Five Mayo men jailed in dispute with Shell

“Up to 200 people protested at Rossport and Bellinaboy on Thursday while at the same time about 100 people assembled outside a Shell depot in Galway.”

Posted Monday 4 July 2005

Five north Mayo men were imprisoned on Wednesday afternoon when they were found to be in contempt of court and then rejected the opportunity to give a commitment that they would comply with a court order. Brendan Philbin, Willie Corduff, Micheál Ó Seighin and brothers Philip and Vincent NcGrath had repeatedly ignored a court injunction which banned them from impeding the Shell oil company in carrying out preparatory work for a high-pressure gas pipeline near the village of Rossport in Erris, Co. Mayo. Shell refused to comment on why the five men had been singled out while no action was taken against a number of others involved in the protests, including landowner Bríd McGarry. read more

THE NEW YORK TIMES: Menacing the Land, but Promising to Rescue the Earth

“The scramble among companies to profit from wind power – a wind rush some have likened to the Klondike gold rush – is such that a consortium of companies led by Royal Dutch Shell wants to build an even more enormous offshore wind farm with 270 turbines costing $2.7 billion where the Thames meets the North Sea 60 miles from London.”:

SHAP, England – In his time, Sir Chris Bonington, one of Britain’s best-known mountaineers, has scaled the icy walls and ridges of the Alps and conquered Mount Everest, among other great peaks in the Himalayas and elsewhere. Now, he has turned his attention to a hill just 1,545 feet high, a spongy, rounded, gusty lump of land that might otherwise have achieved little renown, except for a plan to crown it with windmills. read more

Oil M&A is back, with a slew of companies looking to do deals. Chevron is fighting with China’s Cnooc over U.S. oil company Unocal, and Royal/Dutch Shell suggests it is ready to take to the warpath again. But aren’t these companies crazy to buy oil assets given that crude is trading around $60 (€50) a barrel? If the high oil prices fell, so would valuations. read more
