SHELL is close to settling one of the three major class actions it was facing in the US in the wake of last year’s reserves scandal.

The Anglo-Dutch oil giant has agreed to pay, subject to court approval, $90 million (£52 million) to a clutch of pension funds run for its US staff.

It is the latest move by the group to draw a line under the affair which saw nearly 6 billion barrels wiped from its reserves which had been artificially inflated. read more

Irish Independent: Council uproar over gas pipe motion

Tuesday 19 July 2005

IN a dramatic twist at the end of a marathon Mayo Co Council meeting last night, the Cathaoirleach, Henry Kenny of Fine Gael overturned an earlier, unopposed motion calling on Shell to process the gas from the Corrib field offshore.

But later the proposer of the motion, Fianna Fail Cllr Tim Quinn insisted that his motion stood and he will be considering the legal implications of the Cathaoirleach’s call.

Four hours after Erris-based Cllr Quinn had proposed the call for Shell to process the gas offshore, and the motion had been seconded, another Erris-based councillor, Gerry Coyle of Fine Gael sought clarification as to what motions had been agreed earlier concerning the Rossport Five. read more

LETTERS

Sir – Shouldn’t we backward Irish be grateful for the opportunistic exploitation of Shell and the likes of them? Shouldn’t we welcome like the hospitable folks we are, with many a “Cead Mile Failte”, same as we welcome any oul’ soul from war-torn Africa. Sure what were these people thinking of by trying to obstruct the multi-million dollar construction that has the potential to refine natural gas for nearly a whole generation? So what if these folks foresee this thing blowing up in their faces, won’t get a penny in return or even spoil their environment a bit. Shouldn’t they be happy enough that they could help out another multinational in the name of progress and our hallowed economic growth? What’s a few miserly Irish lives compared to losing €25,000 a day? read more

Moscow Times: Gazprom Rethinks Value of Sakhalin-2

Moscow Times: Gazprom Rethinks Value of Sakhalin-2

Tuesday 19 July 2005

Gas giant Gazprom said on Friday it considered Royal Dutch/Shell’s assets on Sakhalin to be worth less after the oil major doubled the project’s cost estimates last week to $20 billion.

Earlier this month, Gazprom agreed to swap a 50 percent stake in its Siberian Zapolyarnoye gas field for a 25 percent stake in the Shell-led Sakhalin-2 liquefied natural gas project in the Far East.

On Thursday, Shell raised the cost estimate for Sakhalin-2 and postponed the first LNG shipment from the end of 2007 to summer 2008. read more

NewRatings.com: Royal Dutch/Shell ‘underperform’

NewRatings.com: Royal Dutch/Shell “underperform”

Tuesday 19 July 2005

Bear Stearns

NEW YORK, July 18 (newratings.com) – Analyst Frederick P Leuffer of Bear Stearns maintains his “underperform” rating on The Royal Dutch/Shell Group (RD.NYS).

In a research note published on July 15, the analyst mentions that the company has indicated that the total capital investment in its Sakhalin II phase 2 project is now projected at $20 billion, which is nearly double the amount estimated when the project was approved in 2003. Royal Dutch/Shell has also indicated that the increased project costs are partly on account of the rise in service costs and raw material prices, adverse currency effects and miscalculations in the budgeting process. The development has raised further concerns regarding the reliability and transparency of the company’s upstream projects, Bear Stearns adds. read more

A new company – Royal Dutch Shell plc is born tomorrow

ShellNews.net: A new company – Royal Dutch Shell plc is born tomorrow – but it will forever have a SECOND-HAND Internet id if Shell wins domain name battle

Tuesday 19 July 2005

The World Intellectual Property Organisation has appointed a panel to rule on the complaint brought against Alfred Donovan in respect of the domain names registered and used by him: royaldutchshellplc.com; royaldutchshellgroup.com and tellshell.org.

Since Shell has never previously expressed any interest in the two latter domain names which have been operational for such a long time that they have just been renewed, it is reasonable to conclude that Shell’s real interest is in the first name. It happens to be the name of the new public company – Royal Dutch Shell plc – which comes into existence tomorrow as a trading company. The latter domain names have undoubtedly been challenged by Shell in an attempt to bolster its claim to royaldutchshellplc.com read more
