Middle East North Africa Financial Network: Ireland slaps Shell’s wrist over pipeline

“The pipeline is part of the energy company’s $1 billion Corrib natural gas project, which it wants to link to an onshore refinery. The government order has forced RDS to halt work on other parts of the Corrib project.”

DUBLIN, Ireland, Aug. 2 (UPI) — Ireland told Royal Dutch Shell to dismantle a natural gas pipeline that is essential to develop a big offshore project, the Telegraph reported Tuesday.

The government said the energy company had built about 2 miles of pipeline in northern County Mayo without consent.

Irish Examiner: Pipeline controversy – Dempsey giving mixed messages

Irish Examiner: Pipeline controversy – Dempsey giving mixed messages

Wednesday 3 August 2005

The decision by the Minister for the Marine Noel Dempsey, to allow Shell Ireland to commence work on the 75km pipeline, part of its development of the Corrib gasfield, will hardly do anything to defuse the ill-feeling which the company has caused locally.

It also seems somewhat ambiguous for him to order the dismantling of a section of onshore pipeline for which approval had not been given, while giving the go-ahead for the offshore section, as he did yesterday.

Local objectors have expressed their dismay at the minister’s rather belated display of authority on foot of the company’s breach in relation to the onshore pipeline. Shell E&P Ireland took it for granted that they could do undertake the work with impunity and went ahead without permission. read more

Irish Times: Shell to decide shortly when it will lay offshore pipeline

“The world’s largest pipelaying vessel, the 285m (935ft) Solitaire, has been booked for August 15th but the company is expected to meet stiff resistance from supporters of the five men if the ship enters Mayo waters.”

Wednesday 3 August 2005

Shell E&P Ireland is expected to decide “shortly” when it will start laying the high-pressure offshore gas pipeline to the Corrib gas field, after receiving permission yesterday from the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources Noel Dempsey to start the work, writes Lorna Siggins, Marine Correspondent.

The latest consent, which was criticised yesterday by supporters of the five Mayo men still in Cloverhill Prison, represents a setback for the campaign to have an offshore terminal built at sea. read more

ShellNews.net: SHELL’S PREDICTABLE IRISH STEW: Some well-informed advice for the Corrib pipeline protestors

On Monday, Irish Natural Resources Minister Noel Dempsey said that Shell must dismantle the Corrib pipeline. On Tuesday he gave consent for another part of the pipeline to be constructed? Does this mean that today, Wednesday, some of the workers who have just been made redundant will now be rehired?

It would be verging on farce if the situation was not so serious, bearing in mind the incarceration of the Rossport 5 for courageously letting their principles stand in the way of an aggressive and incompetent multinational goliath. read more

The five Mayo men who are in jail over their opposition to the Corrib gas onshore pipeline have condemned the decision by Minister for the Marine Noel Dempsey to sanction Shell’s laying of the offshore section of the pipeline.

The Minister’s decision is “entirely unacceptable”, according to the five men, Willie Corduff, Philip and Vincent McGrath, Brendan Philbin and Micheal O Seighin, who are spending their fifth week in Cloverhill Prison. read more

THE economic benefits of the contentious Corrib gas pipeline were stressed yesterday as permission was granted for the latest section of the project.

Communications, Marine and Natural Resources Minister Noel Dempsey gave the go-ahead to Shell Ireland to begin work on a 75 kilometre offshore pipeline.

Just a day after ordering Shell to dismantle part of the onshore line, which was developed without adequate consent, Mr Dempsey said he was introducing a strict supervisory regime on the pipeline construction. read more

Shell Co of Thailand has pledged to take full responsibility if cars running on Shell gasohol break down, as it strives to boost its sales and motorists’ confidence to shift to crop-derived alternative energy.

“A full guarantee will be given to any motorists whose cars are damaged after filling up with Shell gasohol,” chairman Tiraphot Vajrabhaya said yesterday.

Shell is the third local oil company to introduce gasohol, a blend of 90% gasoline and 10% crop-derived ethanol, after Bangchak and PTT, but the first to offer a performance pledge. read more

The Guardian: It’s like they’re giving it away

“Take a look, for instance, at the oil companies. Yes, they are making handsome profits on the back of sky-high prices. But what are they doing with the cash? True, plenty is going on capital spending, finding and developing new resources, but plenty of it is going back to shareholders – both in the form of dividend payments and share buybacks. Royal Dutch Shell is spending $3.5bn (£1.9bn) buying its own shares”

Wednesday August 3, 2005

Buybacks can be double-edged sword

OK, it was a sunny day. There has been plenty of cheery news from the corporates reporting before the August holidays. The Bank of England’s monetary policy committee is widely expected to reduce interest rates tomorrow. The economic news from the United States and China seems benign.

There may, however, be just a little more behind the run, which has taken the FTSE 100 share index to its best level for more than three years.

Of course, oil at more than $60 a barrel is underpinning heavyweights like BP and Royal Dutch Shell. Of course, healthy corporate earnings are pushing analysts to revising ratings upwards. read more

California Dispute About LNG Terminal

By JIM CARLTON
Staff Reporter of THE WALL STREET JOURNAL
Wednesday August 3, 2005; Page A4

LONG BEACH, Calif. — Jim Spellman and Jose Morales have little in common except what they don’t want in their backyards: a gas plant.

Mr. Spellman is a retired lawyer living in this city’s tony Belmont Heights area. Mr. Morales is an auto mechanic living in its low-income Willmore neighborhood. They both oppose plans for a liquefied-natural-gas plant at the Port of Long Beach. “It’s just too dangerous,” says the 44-year-old Mr. Morales. Mr. Spellman, who is 64, adds, “The whole damned city would suffer.” read more

Biofuel drive is simply another form of aid for Europe’s farms

The Times (UK): Biofuel drive is simply another form of aid for Europe’s farms

“There are new technologies on the way; Shell is working on a venture in Canada that converts straw into ethanol, a more efficient process that produces less CO2.”

Wednesday 3 August 2005

By Carl Mortished

BRUSSELS is pushing for more power from plants. Biofuels, such as ethanol, sound good — fewer harmful emissions, a renewable resource and less dependence on oil imports.

Instead of subsidies for sugar mountains and wine lakes, European farmers would have a ready market for their surplus produce — converting plant starches and sugars into vegetable oil or alcohol-based road fuels. The European Commission is directing us to use more biodiesel and if oil companies are less than enthused, that adds to the attraction — liberation from the multinational merchants of crude. read more

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN (AFX) – Brunei Shell Petroleum (BSP), a joint venture between the Brunei government and the Royal Dutch Shell Group, said it has made a new oil and gas discovery in the Seria North Flank off Borneo island, the second successful find in nearly a year.

The discovery from a well drilled four kilometres offshore in nine metres of water further boosted prospects for the Seria North Flank, which is estimated to contain total recoverable reserves of up to 100 mln barrels of oil, the group said. read more

Mayo News, Ireland: Pipes to be dismantled

“Shell are keeping the injunction in place, and they sought the committal of the men on foot of that. I visited two of them last week, and they remain resolute. I was humbled visiting them. Our support on the ground is mushrooming, and daily pickets of Shell and Statoil stations are continuing.”

Wednesday 3 August 2005

Report by Shane McGrath

AS THE Government ordered Shell to dismantle sections of the controversial Corrib gas pipeline, political parties were urged to stop ‘kicking to touch’ on the issue by a leading campaigner on behalf of protestors. Mr Mark Garavan of the Shell to Sea group said that too many parties were ‘acting as bystanders’, and said they must inform themselves on details of the planned project. He was speaking in the aftermath of Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources, Noel Dempsey ordering Shell to disassemble sections of the pipeline which had been welded together, without the necessary Ministerial consents to do so. Further, Minister Dempsey is understood to have told the company they will be subject to greater scrutiny, with monitoring to be provided by a ministerial technical group. read more

Some local people in one of Ireland’s remotest communities are pitched against petrochemical giant Shell, in a bitter dispute over the routing of a gas pipeline from the Atlantic Ocean to County Mayo.

A crowd stands with placards outside the site of Shell’s proposed gas refinery at Bellanaboy in Erris, County Mayo, where locals in one of Ireland’s remotest areas have been manning a daily blockade. read more
