Irish Times: Mayo Co Council to meet on Corrib gas project

“Shell E&P Ireland said yesterday it was still considering the consent to lay the offshore pipeline granted on Tuesday by Mr Dempsey, but it had not yet responded to his letter of July 31st directing the company to break up the 3km of onshore pipeline which had been welded without ministerial consent.”

Mayo County Council is to hold an emergency meeting within the next fortnight over the Corrib gas field controversy. This follows a six-hour sit-in yesterday at the local authority’s Castlebar offices by wives of the five imprisoned Rossport residents.

Three Fianna Fail councillors were among the requisite five local authority representatives who successfully petitioned the cathaoirleach, Fine Gael councillor Henry Kenny, to hold the meeting after an earlier appeal by the wives and members of the Shell to Sea campaign. read more

Irish Independent: Rossport Five campaigners stage sit-in at council meeting

“There is a lot of concern about the danger to life and limb posed from bringing the gas overland. I would certainly not like it passing near my backyard,”

Thursday Aug 04, 2005

CAMPAIGNERS against Shell’s Corrib pipe-line staged a sit-in at Mayo Co Council offices yesterday in a bid to force an emergency council meeting.

The demonstration caused further embarrassment over the pipe-line controversy for Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny, whose brother Henry is the council’s cathaoirleach.

Earlier this month, Cllr Kenny overturned a motion calling on Shell to process the gas from the Corrib field offshore.

The protestors only ended their sit-in after five councillors provided their signatures for a petition calling for an emergency meeting of the council, at which a re-worded motion is expected to be considered. read more

Lloyds List: Shell suffers further delays at Sakhalin II

Lloyds List: Shell suffers further delays at Sakhalin II

“In July, Shell said capital costs in Sakhalin II have doubled to $20bn because of a raft of issues including the new pipeline routes, increasing contractor costs and changes in project requirements. It has already pulled back first deliveries of liquefied natural gas from the project into 2008.”

Thursday Aug 04, 2005

ROYAL Dutch Shell could possibly face further delays to year-round oil production at the key Sakhalin II project in eastern Russia, writes Martyn Wingrove .

The Anglo-Dutch oil major has already said year-round oil output would be put back to the end of 2007 because of problems laying the onshore pipeline across the island’s icy terrain.

Mitsubishi, a Japanese investor in the project, said the delays could be extended into 2008 because Sakhalin Energy Investment will have to re-route offshore pipelines to avoid a whale breeding area. read more

Irish Times: Compromise in Corrib gas dispute

Irish Times: Compromise in Corrib gas dispute

“There is no doubt that Shell miscalculated badly if its management thought to intimidate other likely protesters by making an example of these men.”:Multinational companies in the oil and gas industry are accustomed to flexing their muscles and getting their way with governments. In its anxiety to develop the gas field, Shell overstepped its authority and undertook work that was not specifically sanctioned by Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources Noel Dempsey. It has since been directed to undo that work. Shell’s public image has been seriously damaged.”

Thursday Aug 04, 2005

It is now days since five men went to jail for refusing to give an undertaking that they would not obstruct work on the construction of the Corrib gas pipeline in North Mayo. They have been in court on a number of occasions since that time. And, in spite of an invitation from High Court president, Mr Justice Finnegan, to purge their contempt and his observation that there was no sense in their remaining in jail, they have continued to opt for incarceration.

High stakes are being played for here. When the protests began some months ago, the great majority of local people had come to accept – after years of controversy and public debate – that the processing of natural gas from the Corrib field would take place on shore. The jailing of the men, following legal action by Shell E&P Ireland, has changed that situation. read more

Irish Independent: Shell game continues

Sir – Now that the Minister has given permission for the laying of the offshore pipeline to Shell, perhaps matters have crystalised a little and it is time to take stock. This was always going to happen as, rightly or wrongly, this matter was decided a long time ago. The incarceration of the Rossport Five continues with the whole country now going on holiday, and Shell are beginning to lay off workers – a local TD involved says it does not matter much as they are not local! read more

Sakhalin project delays may cost Shell $500m

The Times (UK): Sakhalin project delays may cost Shell $500m

DELAYS at Royal Dutch Shell’s Sakhalin Energy project in Eastern Siberia could cost the company as much as $500 million (£282 million) in deferred oil revenues next year, it emerged yesterday.

Shell said that year-round oil production off Sakhalin Island would not begin until 2007, a year later than scheduled.

Massive cost overruns at the Dutch energy group’s largest oil and gas project were revealed last month when Shell admitted that the project’s budget had doubled to $20 billion and that the first cargoes of liquefied natural gas would not be loaded until the summer of 2008, eight months later than expected. read more

Generous pension pots for the board while occupational schemes face shortfall

The Guardian (UK): Generous pension pots for the board while occupational schemes face shortfall

“Under Sir Phil’s leadership Shell was shaken by a crisis over the level of its reserves, which it eventually conceded had been overstated by some 25%. Investors were shocked to read a leaked email from former exploration boss Walter van de Vijver to Sir Phil, the former chairman, in which he said: “I am becoming sick and tired about lying about the extent of our reserves issues.”

Directors of Britain’s biggest companies can look forward to generous pension payouts, according to the Guardian’s survey of top executive pay.

The nine executive directors on the Unilever board have a pension pot worth £80m to see them through retirement – and the figure will almost certainly rise as the group makes more contributions before many of them retire.

Niall FitzGerald, the Anglo-Dutch consumer goods firm’s former chief executive, is one of two directors who have already started taking their pensions. He retired last September after 37 years service with a pension pot worth almost £17m. His colleagues Keki Dadiseth and Patrick Cescau, have also grabbed the top 10 places in the league of corporate pension pots, though they have yet to retire. read more

Shell names Jorma Ollila as new chairman

Financial Times: Shell names Jorma Ollila as new chairman

“The group lags behind competitors such as BP and ExxonMobil in production growth, faces lawsuits in the US over false reserves statements and announced a $10bn cost overrun at Sakhalin-2, its flagship Russian project.”

By Gordon Smith: Published: August 4 2005

Royal Dutch Shell on Thursday named Jorma Ollila, the current chief executive and chairman of Nokia, as a replacement for Aad Jacobs, its outgoing chairman.

Mr Ollila earlier this week outlined his plans to step down from the Finnish telecommunications group, where he has served as chief executive for the last 13 years.

The move follows calls by Aad Jacobs last month for his successor to be neither British nor Dutch following the unification of the oil group after 98 years trading as separate British and Dutch businesses. read more
