Oil edges near $US66 on supply worries

Stuff (New Zealand): Oil edges near $US66 on supply worries

“Protesters in major exporter Nigeria ended a week-long siege of oil facilities on Monday, to pave the way for talks with Royal Dutch Shell over compensation for an oil spill and fire in 2003.”

Wednesday 24 August 2005

LONDON: Oil prices inched towards $66 yesterday as global supply disruptions, both real and anticipated, stoked crude’s rally and signalled increased volatility.

US light crude was 10 cents higher at $65.75 a barrel by 1012 GMT. London Brent crude rose 9 cents to $64.59 a barrel.

A series of supply outages has overshadowed comfortable crude stock levels in the United States, the world’s largest oil consumer, and pushed crude back towards an all-time high of $67.10 hit earlier this month. read more

Humbert Summer School: The Humbert-Davitt summer school was in crisis last night following the withdrawal of two TDs from a debate on the role of independents in politics.

MEP Marian Harkin TD and Kildare North TD Catherine Murphy decided late last night not to participate in the debate because the school’s director John Cooney had withdrawn his invitation to Dr Jerry Cowley.

Their decision followed talks between Mr Cooney, and Ms Harkin and Ms Murphy, aimed at averting the cancellation of today’s session. read more

Financial Times: ONGC mulls counter-bid for PetroKaz

“In Africa, ONGC has been bruised after being trumped by Chinese bids. ONGC was close to buying out Shell’s half share in an Angolan field jointly owned with BP, but was pipped by a Chinese offer strengthened by a promise of large credit lines.”

Oil and Natural Gas Corporation, the Indian energy company, was yesterday moving towards a decision on a counter-bid for Petro-Kazakhstan, the Canada-listed company acquired by China National Petroleum Corp in a contest that underlined the fierce race for energy security by the two Asian economic giants.

CNPC bid $4.18bn for PetroKaz, edging out a joint offer of $3.8bn from ONGC and the London-based Mittal family headed by billionaire Lakshmi Mittal. The Mittals own 88 per cent of Mittal Steel, the world’s largest manufacturer of the metal. read more

The Guardian: Watchdog says LPG firms overcharge

The Guardian: Watchdog says LPG firms overcharge

“Shell downplayed the report, saying that customers were mostly content with their suppliers. It said it was cooperating fully with the commission.”

Wednesday August 24, 2005

Terry Macalister

The competition authorities are looking at ways to crack down on energy companies, including BP and Shell, after mounting evidence that homeowners are paying too much for liquefied gas.

A report by the Competition Commission said there are various aspects of the domestic liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) market that “prevent, restrict or distort competition”. read more

High price of tank gas is due to ‘weak competition’

Daily Telegraph: High price of tank gas is due to ‘weak competition’

“Shell is in the process of selling its worldwide LPG arm. Several private equity houses have been lining up a deal for the unit.”

Homes that are not connected to the national gas grid, but choose to buy gas in cylinders or tanks are paying more than twice as much for the privilege, the Competition Commission said yesterday.

The commission said there was “weak competition” in the domestic liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) market, which is dominated by four companies.

Calor, BP, Shell and Flogas supply 90pc of homes. Calor has half the market, which is worth around £120m a year. LPG is used by some 150,000 UK homes, mostly in rural areas. It is also used in patio heaters and barbecues. read more

Royal Dutch Shell is back in Alaska

Anchorage Daily News: Royal Dutch Shell is back in Alaska

“After leaving the state in 1998, the company has returned and hopes to join BP, ConocoPhillips and ExxonMobil as a major player in Alaska.”

Wednesday 24 August 2005

By MARY PEMBERTON, Associated Press Writer

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) – Royal Dutch Shell is back in Alaska.

After leaving the state in 1998, the company has returned and hopes to join BP, ConocoPhillips and ExxonMobil as a major player in Alaska.

Shell this year made its intentions clear by spending more than $44 million for 84 offshore leases in the Beaufort Sea. Company officials say that is just the beginning.

“Alaska is a great and vast land. It is for people who think big … and that’s what we’re doing,” said Chandler Wilhelm, the company’s Alaska Exploration manager, at an open house Tuesday at Shell’s new offices in midtown Anchorage. read more

“The five men are beginning their ninth week in Cloverhill Prison for obstructing the building of the controversial Corrib gas pipeline.”

WEDNESDAY 24/08/2005

Mayo County Councillors are to visit the Rossport Five today to discuss options that might secure the men’s release from jail.

The five men are beginning their ninth week in Cloverhill Prison for obstructing the building of the controversial Corrib gas pipeline.

Earlier this month, Mayo County Council rejected a motion to call on Shell to build the terminal offshore.

But Council Chairman Henry Kenny says today they will take the role of neutral negotiators in a listening capacity. read more

ROYAL DUTCH SHELL IRISH PIPELINE DILEMMA

ShellNews.net: ROYAL DUTCH SHELL IRISH PIPELINE DILEMMA

Wednesday 24 August 2005: 10.25 EDT

By John Donovan

Shell management is now firmly hooked on a dilemma of its own making arising from what has become an international PR disaster of significant proportions.

Shell would no doubt dearly love for the Rossport 5, languishing in Cloverhill Prison, Dublin (at Shell management’s behest) for eight weeks to be released so that talks on the delayed Corrib pipeline project could be commenced.

However, Shell executives will be concerned about losing face as a result of being publicly seen to be backing down, even though they probably bitterly regret having the men imprisoned in the first place. Furthermore, while the men remain incarcerated there is always the prospect that one of them could become ill (or worse) thereby vastly adding to the pressure on Shell and generating even more widespread negative publicity. The current publicity firestorm could turn into something even more ugly. read more

Rossport Five daughter dismisses Shell ‘PR stunt’

Wednesday 24 August 2005

The daughter of one of the men jailed for opposing the Shell gaspipe line tonight dismissed the company’s latest statement as a PR stunt.

The five Mayo men have been in Cloverhill prison for 50 days after they refused to obey a High Court order to stop obstructing the construction of the pipeline for the Corribgas field on their lands.

Bríd Ní Sheighin said Shell’s announcement that it was considering its legal options would not free her father, Micheál, from jail. read more

Ireland On-Line: Rossport Five standing firm in dispute with Shell

Wednesday 24 August 2005

The Rossport Five are adamant that they will not obey the court order secured against them by Shell, according to Mayo county councillors.

Speaking after a meeting with the men in prison today, the councillors said they had indicated a willingness to compromise on some aspects of the Corrib gas project.

However, they said the men were insisting that they would only enter discussions if Shell lifted the injunction it has taken out against them.

The five Mayo landowners have been in jail for eight weeks for refusing to obey the injunction ordering not to obstruct work on the Corrib gas pipeline. read more
