Distraught Ballinaboy residents issue heartfelt appeal to Shell

Western People: Distraught Ballinaboy residents issue heartfelt appeal to Shell

“We are upset and dismayed that there are five Erris men in Clover Hill prison because of the Corrib gas project.”

Posted Thursday 8 Sept 2005

SIR – Over the past number of weeks your paper has been covering the Shell Rossport five story and now I believe is the appropriate time to put the feelings and views of the Ballinaboy/Leenamore residents on paper.

We are upset and dismayed that there are five Erris men in Clover Hill prison because of the Corrib gas project. Those men and their families felt this was the only option left to them because no one in authority or within Shell were taking their concerns seriously sadly their words were falling on deaf ears. The Ballinaboy/Leenamore residents respect the decision taken by those five men. What’s upsetting us most is that we know if the support that is here now was there for us when we were going through the planning process and the oral hearings we would not have this sad situation in the heart of our community today. read more

“*A top executive at Royal Dutch Shell was found to have written an e-mail saying he was “sick and tired about lying” over its inflated oil and gas reserves. That revelation, uncovered by the company’s own internal report, knocked billions of dollars off its stock market value, and led to fines for Royal Dutch Shell on both sides of the Atlantic.”

Although nothing of legal significance took place in court yesterday, the men were permitted to meet with family members and friends in the time between the two-minute hearing and their return to jail.

During their two-hour stay in the courts complex, the five men mixed with relatives in the Round Hall of the Four Courts before being taken back to their cells in a prison bus to Cloverhill Prison. read more

THE five Co Mayo men, who have been in prison for 71 days for contempt of court relating to the Shell Corrib gas pipeline, made a brief appearance in the High Court yesterday.

As they waited for Ms Justice Mary Laffoy, they talked and joked with relatives and friends and some were shown photo albums of recent family occasions. Later, prison officers allowed them to mix with family and friends while they waited for transport back to prison. Their legal team led by John Rogers, SC, had planned to make an application for discovery of documentation in preparation for a full hearing but the matter was adjourned until October 4. read more

Daily Mail: Cheques are banned at all Shell garages

Cheque: On its way out

Shell has become the first national retailer to ban payment by cheque.

The move is expected to speed the demise of the traditional payment method, which has existed since medieval – and possibly Roman – times.

Shell said managers at its 900 petrol stations had complained about the time and trouble involved in handling cheques.

Staff have to take them to the bank, there are charges to process each cheque and a delay in the funds being cleared. read more

Royal Dutch Shell attempt to thwart Ogoni US Class Action Lawsuit fails: Thurs 8 Sept 2005 17.20pm ET

A US Magistrate Judge, Henry Pitman, has recommended in a report to a US District Judge that motions filed by Royal Dutch Shell to dismiss a class action lawsuit by former residents of Ogoniland, Nigeria, now living in the United States, should be denied.

The case in question before the UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT OF SOUTHERN DISTRICT OF NEW YORK (Case No. 02-CV-7618) relates to Shell’s oil operations in Ogoniland, an area located in the Niger River delta area of Nigeria. The plaintiffs have charged Royal Dutch Shell with violations of the laws of nations and customary international law and seeks legal recognition of a class consisting of “all Ogoni or Ogoni family members who resided in Ogoniland during the period of October 1, 1990 to May 28, 1999” who were injured during the course of the alleged misconduct by Shell. The class could potentially consist of hundreds of thousands of people. read more
