THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) – The directors of Royal Dutch Shell board soundly defeated a proposal Tuesday from an environmental group of shareholders to tighten oversight on ecologically risky ventures and enforce closer cooperation with local communities.

 

After a discussion at Shell's annual general meeting that grew heated at times, the proposal was defeated by 93 percent of the vote representing more than three billion shares. read more

Hugo Chavez leaves Britain today after a controversial visit that saw him enhance his status as a ringmaster of international oil politics.

The Venezuelan president, who sits astride the world's fifth largest oil reserves, used a press conference with Ken Livingstone, the Mayor of London, to make an extraordinary offer to supply cheap fuel direct to poor Britons who face soaring energy bills.

“We have two refineries here, one in the north, one in the south,” said Mr Chavez, who also met trade unionists, Labour MPs and supporters of his socialist project – though notably not Tony Blair – during his two-day visit. read more

PUTTING OFF THE BIG THREE: For the moment, energy concerns have taken a back seat to immigration concerns at the White House, Washington Wire reports; President Bush delayed a meeting with the Big Three auto makers until June 2 to give him time to push his immigration plan this week. Executives from General Motors, Ford and DaimlerChrysler want to ask Mr. Bush for government help in making cars that run on ethanol and other biofuels. They still plan to take their case to Capitol Hill this week. read more

Forbes/AFX News Limited: Shell CEO says Sakhalin project on track, within budget

LONDON (AFX) – Royal Dutch Shell PLC assured that the giant Sakhalin-2 gas project in Russia's Far East remains on course with its revised schedule and budget.

The project, in which Shell owns a 55 pct stake, has suffered cost overruns, doubling the cost of the project to 20 bln usd and delaying its start to 2008 from 2007.

'The project is over 70 pct complete, with first gas deliveries expected in 2008,' chief executive Jeroen van der Veer told shareholders at Shell's annual meeting in The Hague. read more
