Yahoo! Asia News: Gazprom sees Shell deal delayed beyond 2006

AMSTERDAM, June 8 (Reuters) – Russia’s Gazprom and Royal Dutch Shell have delayed a major asset swap deal beyond 2006 after Shell reported a huge cost overrun on its Sakhalin project last year, Gazprom said on Thursday.

“The capital costs for Sakhalin-2 are rising and negotiations might take longer than expected,” Gazprom’s export chief Alexander Medvedev told a news conference.

“It is important for the Russian government to understand the concequences well. I think it will take a lot more time than the end of the year,” he added. Last year Shell doubled its cost estimates for Sakhalin-2 to $20 billion. read more

Still Feeling the Force of Katrina and Facing Another Hurricane Season, Big Oil Takes New Precautions

By Steven Mufson

Shell Oil Co.’s “Mars” platform in the Gulf of Mexico had been through hurricanes, but nothing had prepared it for Hurricane Katrina last year. For four hours, the platform was lashed by 175 mile-per-hour winds and slapped by 80-foot waves. The platform’s tall drilling rig, which looks like a bad copy of the Eiffel Tower, toppled over, and the rig’s 1,000-ton substructure was ripped free, lifted into the air and dropped onto the platform. read more

kommersant.com (Russia): Ukraine Teams Up with Shell against Russia

June 09, 2006

Shell Exploration has entered into an agreement with NAK Naftogaz Ukrainy subsidiary, Ukrgazdobycha, to produce oil and gas at the fields of Dnepr and Donetsk basin. In Ukrainian government, they hope this cooperation will reduce dependency on Russia. But Shell could have just set stakes in Ukraine and will hardly proceed to exact production in the nearest future.

Ukrgazdobycha General Director Ilya Rybchich and Shell Exploration Vice President Rien Herber sealed an oil/gas cooperation agreement in The Hague Thursday, June 8, 2006. “First time over 15 years of our independence, a leading world company, Shell, sets foot on the soil of Ukraine,” Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko, who attended the signing, said emphasizing the negotiations lasted for eight years. read more

IPE.com 8/Jun/06: NETHERLANDS – Oil giant Shell is looking at pooling the assets of some of its main international pension funds under the Netherlands’ new tax-transparent asset pooling vehicle ‘Fonds voor Gemene Rekening’.

“Holland is for us the preferred place of choice for combining our pension assets,” the Dutch daily Het Financieele Dagblad quoted Peter Wit, operational and financial director of Shell Asset Management Company, Samco, as saying.

“The Finance Ministry has woken up after the exodus of investment funds, and is on the right track in offering the opportunity for asset pooling of pension funds, which are already being offered by Luxembourg and Ireland,” Wit said. read more

The WALL STREET JOURNAL: Oil News Roundup: Friday June 9, 2006: ZARQAWI’S EFFECT ON OIL:

Oil prices tumbled in early trading after the death of Iraqi insurgent leader Abu Musab Zarqawi. But crude recovered most of its losses and ended trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange at more than $70 a barrel. Here is Thursday’s roundup of oil and energy news.

* * *
ZARQAWI’S EFFECT ON OIL: One reason oil prices eventually stabilized: Many traders realized soon enough that the welcome end of one menace in Iraq didn’t mean crude oil was suddenly free to gush from Iraq’s pipes. Sectarian and insurgent violence won’t end tomorrow. Iraq’s oil infrastructure, meanwhile, was in awful shape after decades of neglect even before Saddam fell in 2003, and there hasn’t been time or security enough to rebuild it yet. “The end of Zarqawi will not be the end of threats to oil exports in Iraq,” said Mustafa Alani, an Iraq expert at the Gulf Research Council in Dubai. Meanwhile, oil’s early declines might have had at least as much to do with global economic jitters and stock selloffs as with the death of Mr. Zarqawi. read more

Associated Press
June 8, 2006 7:37 p.m.

PORT HARCOURT, Nigeria — Nigerian militants released six hostages Thursday — five South Koreans and one Nigerian — liberating them at the request of a jailed militant leader whose freedom they had demanded in exchange.

The hostages were seen arriving by car at the office of the regional governor in the southern oil hub of Port Harcourt late Thursday, a day after they were kidnapped from a Shell gas plant as part of a violent raid in Nigeria’s oil-rich delta. There they were handed over to their employers, said Rivers state attorney general, Odein Ajumogobia. read more

PORT HARCOURT, Nigeria (AP) — Militants freed one Nigerian and five South Korean oil field workers Thursday, letting the hostages go at the request of a jailed rebel leader.

The workers arrived by car at the office of the regional governor in the southern oil hub of Port Harcourt late Thursday, a day after gunmen kidnapped them from a natural gas plant during the latest attack on the African nation’s oil industry.

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta first said they would free the hostages only if the government released Mujahid Dokubo-Asari, a prominent militant jailed last year on treason charges. read more
