Royal Dutch Shell Plc .com: Oil Rig Attacked, Naval Officer Taken Hostage!

An oil rig belonging to ConOil was last night attacked and a naval officer stationed aboard abducted by unknown armed men believed to be members of militant Niger Delta youths fighting for more autonomy and control of oil resource in the area.

The militants also carted away some automatic weapons belonging to the Nigerian Navy.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The major rebel group operating in the area, Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) last week warned the government of more attacks. read more

Shell New Zealand will appeal against a High Court judgment that effectively prevents it from taking over as operator at the Maui gasfield.

Two weeks ago the High Court upheld an application by Todd Energy for a permanent injunction stopping the directors of joint company Shell Todd Oil Services – half Shell and half Todd appointees with Shell having a casting vote – voting to resign as operator of the Maui field and replace it with a Shell company. read more

NEW YORK — Dutch energy company Royal Dutch Shell PLC said Wednesday its Shell Oil Products U.S. division has sold stakes in 31 sites and 10 fuel supply contracts to Gilligan Oil Co., an Ohio wholesaler, for an undisclosed sum.

The sale was part of a plan Shell unveiled in 2005 to shift its retail assets to wholesale in 16 regions, thereby strengthening the company’s wholesale business.

Shell’s U.S.-listed shares shed 16 cents to $67.72 on the New York Stock Exchange. read more

TORONTO, July 5 (Reuters) – Shell Canada Ltd.’s (SHC.TO: Quote, Profile, Research) C$7.3 billion ($6.6 billion) Athabasca oil sands expansion in northern Alberta is facing massive expense overruns, with one of partners in the project saying on Wednesday that capital costs of a “fully integrated expansion” could be about 50 percent higher than those anticipated last year.

Western Oil Sands (WTO.TO: Quote, Profile, Research), which owns a 20 percent stake in the project and made the overrun estimate, also said it now expects production to begin sometimes 2010. The fourth quarter of 2009 or the first quarter of 2010 had earlier been targeted. read more

BEIJING (MarketWatch) — Royal Dutch Shell PLC (RDSB.LN) has submitted a development plan to PetroChina Co. (PTR) to help secure production in the largest gas field in southwestern China, said a source close to the companies. The Luojiazhai gas field in Sichuan province is PetroChina’s largest gas field in southwest with 58 billion cubic meters of proven reserves, the source said.

If PetroChina accepts Shell’s development plan, Shell may win a production-sharing contract on another nearby smaller gas field called Dukouhe, which has 28 billion cubic meters of proven gas reserves, the source added. read more

To correct the problem, lawmakers are pressuring companies to renegotiate the contracts. While encouraging these negotiations is appropriate, blackmailing companies – by banning their participation in future drilling opportunities, for example – isn’t the best solution. read more

Royal Dutch Shell Plc .com: Duma approves Gazprom export bill

A bill confirming state-owned gas giant Gazprom’s monopoly of exports has been approved by Russia’s lower house of parliament, the Duma.

The bill stipulates that Russian gas exports run through state-owned pipes – all of which are Gazprom’s.

Gazprom controls all of Russia’s gas export pipelines and 90% of production.

News of the bill will worry European Union officials, who have been pushing for Russia to give firms greater access to its gas fields and export pipelines. read more

Tokyo Electric Power Co. and other Japanese buyers of natural gas are lobbying Irving-based Exxon Mobil Corp. to link up with Royal Dutch Shell to cut costs of the fuel from Russia to Asia’s biggest market.

Tokyo Electric, the world’s biggest buyer of liquefied natural gas, recently asked Exxon Mobil to consider abandoning a plan to pipe natural gas from Russia to Japan and instead turn the fuel into LNG, said Hiroyasu Murakashi, a manager at Tokyo Electric. Japanese companies are calling for an alliance of the gas projects now under way in Russia’s Sakhalin region. read more

China National Petroleum Corp is considering buying a stake worth up to $3bn (£1.6bn) in the initial public offering of Russian oil giant Rosneft, as part of China’s strategy to improve access to Russia’s oil sector.

Rosneft, which hopes to raise $10bn-$11.7bn through listings in London and Moscow at the end of next week, is understood to have been in formal discussions with at least four oil companies. read more
