Sun Star (Philippines): Technology to help gov’t road projects

Monday, September 04, 2006

ONE of the world’s major oil players has developed products that will help local governments implement road projects.

Shell Bitumen, a member of the Shell group of companies, launched the Instapave and Flexopave products and technology last Friday at the Cebu City Marriott Hotel.

The technology—which was developed in a joint venture with Asphalt Vrock Corp. and Philippine Asia Resources Inc.—is meant to protect government funds and taxpayers’ money, most of which are spent on roads, said Shell Bitumen project coordinator Ed Dalisay.

Upgrade

Instapave system involves the upgrading of gravel roads to permanent pavement to enable these to withstand different weather conditions.

Flexopave is designed to “rejuvenate” existing and old asphalt roads, which “can be done without reconstruction.”

According to at statement from Shell Bitumen, the technology allows repair or “rejuvenation” of roads without adding height to the road.Shell Bitumen is proposing that the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) adopt the technologies as cost-effective solutions to improve transportation and infrastructure systems in the country.

Kim Villanueva of Asphalt Vrock said the local government of Puerto Princesa, Palawan decided to use the technologies and allotted P100 million for the Madagascar-Sabang road.

Asphalt Vrock, Villanueva said, is Pilipinas Shell’s “preferred” business partner with Philippine Asia Resources Inc. as the applicator for Central Visayas.

Need

“As the number and weight of trucks are growing over the years, so is the need to protect our pavements,” John Read, development and product manager for Global Bitumen, said during the launching of the technologies. (MMM)
