Kieron McFadyen to head Royal Dutch Shell HSE

All,

I want to make you aware of an important announcement going on the Shell Wide Web today. I am pleased to announce Kieron McFadyen has been appointed as Vice President, HSE, Royal Dutch Shell, effective November 1.

This role, which is a new focused position in the Group, reinforces Shell’s commitment to improve our global HSE performance. He will be based in The Hague. Kieron has played a key role in EPE from the very start and in addition to managing the large technical directorate, he has been instrumental in maintaining strong external stakeholder relationships thoughout the north east of Scotland and the UK.

Kieron’s successor will be John Gallagher, who is currently West Asset Manager in the Gulf of Mexico. John returns to his native Scotland after 4 years in the U.S., having worked in Expro before that as the Development Manager of the Northern Business Unit. The combination of John’s technical and operational experience, as well as his knowledge of Europe upstream will be important to help EPE stay the course in our delivery to the Group. Please join me in welcoming John, his wife Catherine, and their four children to the EPE family.

I want to address three questions that may be on your mind—Is this move consistent with Jeroen’s drive for longer tenure, why move Greg and Kieron at the same time, and will this mean a change of course for PD and TD?

As you know, Kieron played a leading role in the creation of EPE and led the programme office designing EPE for nearly a year prior to the launch of the organisation in October 2003-so nearly 4 years. And of course before his involvement in EPE, he was 3 years in NAM. So yes it could have been longer but it clearly hasn’t been a fly-by assignment either.

My preference would not have been to move both Greg and Kieron at the same time, but here is where Enterprise First kicks in. Jeroen’s commitment to raise the game on global HSE has been clear in his recent messages to staff. Part of that commitment is to get more senior leader input at the Corporate level and Kieron has been requested to do just that. Kieron will bring operational, technical, international, project and stakeholder experience to the new role.

As far as changing directions, you already know the answer to that. John Gallagher and John Hollowell are committed to continuing the journey and the direction we are on-in other words they are committed to STAY THE COURSE. That is not to say we don’t have plenty of room for continued improvement, especially on delivery. But the overall direction we have set for EPE is still solid.

There have been many changes in the ELT over the last year, but we will manage through it and I know you will help me in keeping focused on the task at hand—improving our safety performance and delivering our business targets!

Tom
