LAGOS, Oct 10 (Reuters) – The Nigerian unit of Royal Dutch Shell
About 60 people were on the facility at Oporomur in the Southern Ijaw area of Bayelsa state, when it was seized early on Tuesday, the spokesman said. The authorities have been informed and are negotiating with the attackers to leave the platform.
“Some armed youths shot their way into our facility at Nun River and took over the security post. They ordered people on the facility to the security post where they are all being held now,” the spokesman said.
It was not clear how many people were on the facility at the time of the attack or if anybody was hurt.
“There were about 60 people on the facility at the time of the attack, but some may have left so we don’t know the exact number,” the spokesman added.
Shell is Nigeria’s biggest operator, accounting for nearly half of the 2.4 million bpd output of the world’s eighth biggest crude oil exporter.
Before the latest outage, Shell had 486,000 bpd of Nigerian production shut at fields that it operates, mostly after militant attacks.
Nigerian oil officials estimated in September that Africa’s biggest producer is losing between 800,000 and 872,000 barrels per day (bpd) of crude output due to militant attacks and pipeline leaks.
