Nigerian Tribune: Ibori commends Shell

SYLVESTER IDOWU, Warri – 18.10.2006

Governor James Ibori of Delta State has commended Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) for setting examples for other multi-national companies operating in the state.

The governor made the commendation yesterday during the inauguration of a N55 million health centre built by the oil company in Egbo-Uhurie community in Ughelli North Local Government Area of the slate.

The governor, represented by his deputy, Sir Benjamin Elue, said that such meaningful projects would complement the efforts of the government in healthcare delivery to the rural people.

The governor said that the health centre would serve as a standard for the state government in building more health centres in the state.

SPDC’s General Manager, West, Mr. Cor Zegelaar, explained that the project was executed with the participation of the community.

He said the company adopted the “Integrated Community Development” approach with the aim of empowering host communities to be responsible for their development through partnering and capacity building.

“The main goals are to improve the quality of life of the people and to make meaningful contributions to the socio-economic and general well being of host communities”, Zegelaar said.

He disclosed that the health centre would serve Egbo- Uhurie alongside five neighboring communities which include Otokutu, Usiephrun, Opete, Okpaka and Abara.
