AS THE year-end deadline looms, Malaysian telecommunications companies (telcos) are using Shell petrol stations nationwide to register prepaid customers.

Celcom (Malaysia) Bhd, Digi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd, and Maxis Communications (Malaysia) Bhd will collaborate with Shell Malaysia to enable prepaid registration at Shell Select convenience stores nationwide.

As of today, 180 of these stores will be equipped with a special terminal to enable prepaid customers to register their lines.

Over the next two weeks, the service will be extended to another 300-400 petrol stations nationwide, Shell Convenience Retail Team leader Mohamed Najeb Mansor said. He said the company plans to fix the terminals in 600 out of its 820 petrol stations across the country.

“As a responsible corporate citizen, we see this initiative as our contribution to assist the Government in the task of registering the prepaid mobile service users in the country.

“In addition, this move would also enable our petrol stations to be a one-stop-centre for prepaid mobile service as the terminal located in our stores can also be used to top up the prepaid cards,” he said at a signing ceremony in Cyberjaya yesterday.

The terminals to be placed in Shell convenience stores are supplied by MobilityONE Bhd. The costs of fitting these terminals in Shell convenience stores are equally financed by Celcom, Maxis and Digi.

The Government has set December 15 2006 as the deadline for all prepaid mobile users to register their lines. To register, the users are required to visit their service providers’ service centre, authorised agent or dealers with their mobile phone and identity card/passport for verification.

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission content, consumer network security division general manager Mohd Ali Hanafiah highlighted that as at October 2006, around 9.3 million or 51 per cent of the total 18 million prepaid mobile users have registered their lines.
