Another slick fundraising campaign by a major oil player is helping improve the lives of needy Calgarians.
Employees of Shell Canada and the company have raised a whopping $3.6 million for United Way, as announced today by the oil company’s president and CEO, Clive Mather.
“The amount is a measure of the heart of this company, the generosity of the staff and retirees and the care they have for this great city of Calgary,” Mather said.
“This reflects the values and history of the people of Shell Canada coming together to contribute to society.”
Half of the total raised — $1.8 million — was in matching funds from the company.
While the 2006 funds raised fell short of last year’s record $4.2-million total, Mather is still thrilled to help give to an organization committed to building community.
The year-long drive, which was highlighted during a two-week stretch in September, saw employees donate payroll money, raise money through fun events such as auctions and dress-up days at work and volunteer 2,200 hours in 25 Days of Caring events in Calgary, Mather said.
And 39 children of Shell employees also participated in the fundraising effort by selling popcorn and collecting items such as diapers, socks and underwear for NeighbourhoodLink Calgary and the Children’s Cottage Society of Calgary’s Crisis Nursery.
All totalled, Shell Canada’s 2006 United Way campaign is the biggest contribution to the local chapter, said United Way regional president Ruth Ramsden-Wood.
“I have to say Shell employees are amazing for their interest and engagement with the community,” Ramsden-Wood said.
“They are our largest corporate donor who has shown there are so many ways to make a difference.
“Shell is helping to make Calgary a truly great city for everyone.”
