Shell and Gazprom are both confident that a deal on Sakhalin-2 will be reached this week, a Shell spokesman said Sunday after the project’s shareholders held talks with Russian officials.

The heads of Shell, Mitsui and Mitsubishi flew into Moscow for talks Friday in the latest sign that the companies were close to a final deal with Gazprom on its entry into Sakhalin-2.

“Both sides hope to reach a conclusion by the end of this week,” said Alf D’Souza, vice president for external affairs at Shell Exploration and Development. read more

All good things must eventually end, and so it was last week for the 14-day run of positive numbers on Russian markets, which analysts said could now expect to be less liquid and more volatile as the holiday season begins.

On Tuesday, the RTS was down 0.7 percent and the MICEX dipped 0.1 percent, but both finished the week in positive territory as investors’ worries were eased. read more

Shell activities cause worldwide problems. With the money it has earned this year, the oil concern could put an end to many of the environmental and health problems which accompany its projects.

On February 1st, 2007, Shell announces its 2006 annual figures. That day Friends of the Earth, together with thousands of people, will run full-page advertisements in British and Dutch newspapers. The people will call upon Shell to spend a portion of its 2006 earnings to solve problems caused by the company. read more

ShellNews.net: Another leaked email from Jeroen van der Veer

By John Donovan

An Open Letter to Shell CEO, Jeroen van der Veer

Hello Mr Van der Veer

I have just received a copy of what appears to be your latest attempt to revive flagging employee morale. You invited feedback, but perhaps not from the recipient of a leaked email, even if a bona fide member of Royal Dutch Shell Plc (which I am). Your email is notable more for what is missing than for the usual banal BS propaganda.

The double Dutch BS: In regards to the BS, I have noticed your reference to Shell’s claimed “core values: honesty, integrity and respect for people.” You really are an old fraud. I personally brought to your attention a conspiracy by Shell managers to deceive and cheat companies pitching for what was supposed to be a fair tender process for a major Shell contract. We supplied irrefutable documentary proof. You and your charlatan colleagues ignored the evidence and gave unqualified support to the dishonest Shell mastermind behind the deception. read more

The Scotsman: Shell sees Sakhalin-2 deal with Gazprom this week

MOSCOW (Reuters) – Royal Dutch Shell could make a deal with Gazprom on the $22 billion Sakhalin-2 project by the end of this week if progress in talks continues, a spokesman said on Sunday.

“If progress continues to be made, we would expect talks to conclude by the end of this week,” said Shell spokesman Alf D’Souza. He described the talks as constructive.

Industry sources told Reuters last week that Shell has offered to cede control of the Sakhalin-2 project, the world’s largest liquefied natural gas project. It is also Russia’s biggest single foreign investment. read more

Financial Mail on Sunday: Russia’s a cuddly bear in the energy war

17 December 2006
LISA BUCKINGHAM, FINANCIAL MAIL EDITOR

Drilling for oil and gas has never been for faint hearts. And as most of the easily recoverable fields are now rapidly being run down, energy giants are being forced to confront bigger and bigger risks in an effort to replenish their reserves.

Once again, though, Russia has demonstrated that the political risks involved in ensuring that an oil giant has a viable future can be every bit as challenging as the physical hurdles.

By subjecting Shell to an almost paralysing blizzard of environmental complaints on the giant Sakhalin project, Moscow has succeeded in securing control for its own Gazprom. read more

Bloomberg: Shell, Russia to Hold Talks on $22 Billion Sakhalin-2 This Week

By Bradley Cook

Dec. 17 (Bloomberg) — Shareholders of Royal Dutch Shell Plc’s Sakhalin-2 venture will meet with Russian Energy Minister Viktor Khristenko in Moscow this week as Russia’s gas-export monopoly OAO Gazprom seeks a stake in the $22 billion project.

Khristenko will hold “a regular meeting” with shareholders of Sakhalin-2 next week, the energy ministry said on its Web site late yesterday. The last meeting was Friday, the ministry said.

Gazprom, based in Moscow, is seeking to join Sakhalin-2, the last major energy project in Russia fully owned by foreigners. Shell owns 55 percent of the oil and gas development and Mitsui & Co. and Mitsubishi Corp. of Japan own 25 percent and 20 percent, respectively. read more
