LONDON — Shell will build more liquefied natural gas processing units at its Sakhalin-2 project in Russia if it gains access to more reserves with Gazprom, its new state-run partner.

Shell and its two Japanese partners agreed in December to sell Gazprom half their stakes in the Sakhalin-2 venture, which includes the country’s first LNG export terminal. Shell had anticipated years before the deal with Gazprom that it might build more LNG units, called trains, to create an export hub for Sakhalin-area projects. read more

Nigerian Tribune: Shell-Ogoni: No truce in sight

The Ogoni/Shell relationship does not seem to be showing any sign of improvement as recent developments have been characterised by accusations and counter-accusations. Bolaji Ogundele appraises the turn of events and the possibility of a truce.

One of the most famous issues about Nigeria, which keeps coming up like a television soap opera, is the love lost between the Ogoni people of Rivers State and the oil giant, Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC).

On a daily basis, the Ogoni nation, blessed with an expanse of oil-rich topography, trades blame and accusations with its former oil-exploring tenant, SPDC. The Ogonis seem resolute on not having anything to do with Shell again in their lives. read more

By Alf D’Souza (Shell spinmeister)

The Sakhalin-2 integrated oil and gas project is the world’s largest, operated by the Sakhalin Energy Investment Co., with Shell as one of its shareholders and technical adviser to the project. With a budget of $20 billion, the project represents the largest foreign investment project in the country’s history.

Robert Skidelsky’s comment “Coming Out Negative in the Balance,” published in The Moscow Times on Jan. 19, made a number of assertions about the Sakhalin-2 project that I believe call for clarification. read more

LA PAZ, Bolivia (AP) — Soldiers and police retook control of a natural gas installation Saturday, using tear gas and rubber bullets to drive out protesters who had forced the closing of a key pipeline serving the nation’s two largest cities.

Demonstrators seized the Transredes pumping station near Camiri, 320 miles southeast of La Paz, following five days of protests demanding that President Evo Morales broaden his petroleum nationalization and expand state energy company operations in the area. read more

The Observer: BP will come close to profit record despite bad news

Oliver Morgan, industrial editor
Sunday February 4, 2007

Oil giant BP is expected this week to come within a whisker of its highest ever annual profit.

However, while arch rival Shell posted its biggest total to date – $25bn (£13bn) – last week, disappointing production levels and slimmer refining and marketing margins are likely to hit BP’s figures.

Analysts expect fourth-quarter earnings of around $3.8bn, giving year-end figures of some $21.3bn.

As for other companies, the results could be a highwater mark for BP as oil prices are expected to come down in 2007 and 2008. read more
