THE Suri Seri Begawan Hospital in Kuala Belait will soon acquire a new ambulance courtesy of the Brunei Shell Petroleum (BSP) Company’s $250,000 donation.

Zainal Abidin Mohd Ali, BSP deputy managing director, handed the mock cheque to Yusof Amba, deputy permanent secretary of the Ministry of Health at a ceremony held at the ministry’s offices yesterday.

The contribution will also be used to purchase a bed-side vital sign monitor and a mannequin for basic life support training purposes.

The BSP deputy managing director said that the donation is part of the company’s “commitment to the Brunei’s government in providing opportunities such as supporting welfare capabilities and capacity”.

The company intends to help the sultanate in many ways, he added. The company’s financial support is aimed at strengthening the long-established and mutually beneficial cooperation between BSP and the Belait hospital.

The Suri Seri Begawan Hospital is the main tertiary medical centre of referral for BSP employees and dependants.

It also reaffirms the company’s long-standing commitment and tradition of supporting community development activities in the Belait district, where the oil company’s operations are based.

In July last year, Royal Dutch Shell also donated US$5 million for the development of a health promotion centre in Brunei. Construction of the proposed centre is scheduled for completion next year.

The centre will spearhead efforts to increase public understanding of health issues and risks of diseases, provide expertise to promote a healthy lifestyle and to assist learning institutions to undertake research studies on health.
