The Des Moines Register: Ask candidates about energy, climate: How fast will you act?

Bill Becker • SPECIAL TO THE REGISTER • March 1, 2008

Three of the four remaining presidential candidates have vowed to take strong action on the linked threats of climate change and energy insecurity. Remarkably, this means our next president – Republican or Democrat – will almost certainly end Washington’s eight-year hiatus from meaningful climate action.

Not a moment too soon. The 44th president will inherit the Mother of All Environmental Issues, a global crisis that world leaders have called “our defining moment” and the science community says we must address now. Meantime, the world is running low on oil. Within seven years, the head of Shell Oil predicts, global demand for oil will surpass production. read more

Calgary Herald: Nigeria oil hub targeted in night attack, one hurt

Reuters
Published: Saturday, March 01, 2008

PORT HARCOURT, Nigeria (Reuters) – Attackers armed with AK-47 rifles and dynamite blew up a police houseboat on Bonny Island, an oil and gas export hub in Nigeria’s southern Niger Delta, a police spokeswoman said on Saturday.

No oil and gas facilities were damaged. Royal Dutch Shell has an oil export terminal at Bonny and the Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas company has its installations there.

Ireju Barasua, a police spokeswoman in the Rivers state capital Port Harcourt, said the attackers blew up a marine police houseboat, torched some cars and also aimed explosives at the compound of the traditional ruler of Bonny. One man was seriously hurt. read more

oilvoice.com: Shell Say Cheap Renewable Energy is ‘Years Away’

Saturday, March 01, 2008

Jeroen van der Veer has said that while the world faces a doubling in its thirst for energy by 2050, renewable sources of energy remain too expensive and their full development will take decades. Meanwhile, we will need to rely on conventional fossil sources such as gas, oil and coal, which have a finite supply and makes me think it is touch and go just to what extent renewables might be installed before the world has to confront a major energy crunch. There are three main forces driving human demand for energy, one being the rising population – predicted to reach 9 billion by 2050 – secondly, that many conventional fossil resources that were readily recoverable are now in a phase of depletion; thirdly, that renewables are still far too expensive. read more

Throwing mud at Shell (updated)

By John Donovan

The following comment was posted on our Live Chat facility on Saturday 1st March 2008.

Guest 1389: Mr. Donovan – what sort of journalistic bias and dribble makes you attach the so called $500K bribe in the headline from the Wall Street Times on Prince Jefri of Brunei. If I was the writer of the article (Mark Meremont) I’d be most annoyed. You don’t even bother to explain the asterisk upfront. Again you add any items to your story that you feel can throw mud at Shell. I suggest you improve your journalistic skills before getting yourself sued. read more

PlanetArk.org: ANALYSIS – Big Oil May Strike Out With Next US President (*Shell Oils John Hofmeister is pushing for a different outcome)

WASHINGTON – Oil and gas companies for years have pushed for drilling access on more US government lands, but they could be left out in the cold under the next American president when it comes to getting new acres to explore for energy.

Energy companies say they need to develop more domestic gas and oil supplies to help meet growing demand, but federally owned areas that hold most of those reserves — from onshore Alaska to waters off the West and East coasts of the lower 48 states — have drilling bans. read more

THE WALL STREET JOURNAL: Obama Campaign Enlists Lobbyists (*Shell connections)

By MARY JACOBY
March 1, 2008; Page A4

Sen. Barack Obama’s refusal to accept donations from federal lobbyists is a centerpiece of his White House bid, but lobbyists still advise the Democratic front-runner and volunteer on his campaign, underlining the enduring connection between special interests and politicians.

The Illinois senator’s record Internet fund-raising from small donors has made him less reliant on contributions from corporate executives and has given him room to craft a strong campaign message against money in politics. “It is important for us to crack down on how these special interests are able to influence Congress,” Sen. Obama said in a debate on Tuesday, explaining his rationale for refusing money from federal lobbyists and political action committees. read more

Billions Later, Jefri’s in a Royal Mess (Front page story)
By MARK MAREMONT

London

Prince Jefri Bolkiah of Brunei once was one of the wealthiest men in the world. Now he’s worried he may soon be homeless and forced into bankruptcy.

“They want me to give it all back,” he says, flanked by giant Dutch landscape paintings and billowing gold drapery in the cavernous living room of his London villa, where he resides with one of his three wives and two of his 18 children. “We don’t know where we are going to live.” read more

Guardian headline: ‘Enjoy life while you can’ Climate science maverick

James Lovelock believes catastrophe is inevitable, carbon offsetting is a joke and ethical living a scam. So what would he do? By Decca Aitkenhead

Saturday March 1 2008

In 1965 executives at Shell wanted to know what the world would look like in the year 2000. They consulted a range of experts, who speculated about fusion-powered hovercrafts and “all sorts of fanciful technological stuff”. When the oil company asked the scientist James Lovelock, he predicted that the main problem in 2000 would be the environment. “It will be worsening then to such an extent that it will seriously affect their business,” he said. read more

Financial Times: Eni to put $4bn into Venezuela oil project

By Ed Crooks and Megan Murphy in London
Published: March 1 2008 02:00 | Last updated: March 1 2008 02:00

Eni, the Italian oil and gas group, plans to invest $4bn in Venezuela, the biggest commitment to the country by a western oil company since President Hugo Chávez began to take control of its oil projects in 2005.

Eni has reached agreement in principle with PDVSA, Venezuela’s state-owned oil company, to develop an area of the Orinoco belt, one of the world’s largest oil reserves.

The deal is the most concrete sign yet of Venezuela’s enthusiasm for foreign investment to revive its ailing oil industry. It also reflects Eni’s strategy of being among the first big oil companies to invest in politically risky countries. read more

Eastern Daily Press: Calls for Bacton fire cover review

01 March 2008 05:09

Calls have been made for Bacton gas terminal to reinstate its own on-site fire crew after Thursday evening’s explosion at the complex.

But last night terminal operators Shell and the fire service said they had full confidence in their “excellent” response to the emergency, which saw crews attending from across the county.

Yesterday a five party investigation – with experts from Shell, the Health and Safety Executive, the Environment Agency, police and fire service – began into the cause of the blast in the waste water system at the Shell terminal. read more

MSN.com: Gas pipe still shut as cold snap nears

MSN Shell image

01.03.2008 03:55

LONDON (Reuters) – How long a key gas supply pipeline will remain closed after an import terminal fire was unclear on Friday as checks on the extent of the damage lasted into the weekend, with freezing weather forecast for next week.

One of two pipelines affected by the Thursday’s fire at Royal Dutch Shell’s terminal in Bacton resumed flows into the UK of the fuel used to heat most homes at midday Friday.

But the Bacton Shell pipeline was still not flowing any gas early on Friday evening, data from National Grid showed, while official weather forecaster the Met Office warned of sub-zero overnight temperatures in many parts of the country, including London, on Monday. read more

Financial Times: Shell says plant fire will not stop supplies

By Rebecca Bream
Published: March 1 2008 03:01 | Last updated: March 1 2008 03:01

Shell was unable to say on Friday when its Bacton gas processing terminal – which handles about 10 per cent of the UK’s supply – would be back up and running following a huge fire on Thursday night.

However, the company insisted there would be “no detrimental effect” on the security of the nation’s gas supplies.

It said the BBL gas pipeline from the Netherlands and the gas interconnector with Belgium, which both come into the Norfolk terminal, were unaffected by the blaze. read more
