The Lakeside Leader: Don’t hold your breath for Shell

Joe McWilliams
Lakeside Leader

Three weeks ago, Lesser Slave Lake MLA Pearl Calahasen raised a lot of eyebrows at a Slave Lake Chamber of Commerce meeting. She said that the oil company Shell was planning to invest $20 billion in a heavy oil project north of Wabasca. Not only that, but they expected a community of anywhere from 4,000 to 15,000 people to spring up in the bush.

Following up, The Leader found the company much more cautious in its pronouncements. Shell spokesman Kurt Kadatz said it would be likely the middle of the next decade before the company even makes a decision on investment on a commercial scale. Until then, he said, there’s no point in talking figures. read more

April 24, 2008
Robin Pagnamenta

Royal Dutch Shell plans to cut 180 jobs from its North Sea operations as oil and gas production declines.

Shell said that the job losses would be mainly administrative positions at its headquarters in Aberdeen and would take place over the next three years as part of an efficiency drive.

Shell, the world’s second-largest listed oil company, has been scaling down its North Sea operation since June, when it put part of it up for sale and dropped plans for a £25 million new base in Aberdeen. read more

“We will start our first LNG shipments at the beginning of next year at the latest,” Alexander Medvedev, head of Gazprom’s export arm, told a briefing.

Last year, Sakhalin Energy, the operator of Sakhalin 2, controlled by Gazprom and involving Royal Dutch/Shell, Mitsui and Mitsubishi, said it would delay first LNG shipments to spring 2009 from the initially planned end of this year. read more

ArabianBusiness.com: Iraq sets oil majors contract ultimatum

by Reuters on Wednesday, 23 April 2008

Iraq may drop oil service deals with oil majors if they fail to sign the contracts by June, Iraqi Oil Minister Hussain Al-Shahristani said on Tuesday.

Iraq is negotiating five short-term oilfield service contracts worth around $500 million each aimed at boosting its output by around a quarter. The Opec member had hoped to sign the contracts in March.

“June is a bit late, if they are not ready by then we might not really require technical service contracts… we may drop them if they are not signed soon,” he told reporters. read more

ANCHORAGE (Reuters) – Alaska on Tuesday rejected Exxon Mobil Corp’s (XOM.N: Quote, Profile, Research) latest plan for the giant Point Thomson natural gas field on the North Slope despite industry warnings of another lengthy setback to development of an Alaska gas pipeline.

Exxon said it will appeal the decision, which terminates the Point Thomson development unit and could lead to the cancellation of the field leases. A spokeswoman said the energy company plans to “pursue all alternatives to protect our rights to develop these resources.” read more

Yahoo! NEWS: Marcus Samuel’s Oil Excursion

Alan R. Elliott
Tue Apr 22, 6:21 PM ET

It had been three decades since the first oil well was drilled in 1859.

Cars hadn’t been invented, so no gas stations existed.

Oil was yet to be found in Texas.

Oil firms were producing kerosene to light lamps around the world, but John Rockefeller’s Standard Oil was losing ground.

Standard, based in Cleveland, ruled the industry, selling three of every four gallons of kerosene traded worldwide.

But in the late 1880s, Russian outfits run by two families — the Nobels and Rothschilds — were carving into Standard’s turf. read more

Bloomberg: Oil Is Little Changed After Rising to Record on Dollar Weakness

By Christian Schmollinger

April 23 (Bloomberg) — Crude oil was little changed in New York near a record as investors purchased commodities after the dollar fell to an all-time low against the euro and concern that global supply may be disrupted.

Oil surged to $119.90 a barrel yesterday after the dollar reached $1.6019 to the euro on expectations of higher European Central Bank interest rates. Royal Dutch Shell Plc closed 169,000 barrels a day of Nigerian supply after attacks on a pipeline last week.
