Shell says security in Niger Delta is improving

Tue May 20, 2008 9:23am ED
LONDON, May 20 (Reuters) - The security situation in the Niger Delta, where civil violence has shut in hundreds of thousands of barrels per day of production, is improving, oil major Royal Dutch Shell Plc (RDSa.L: QuoteProfile,Research) said on Tuesday.

“The situation is getting better on the security front,” exploration and production boss Malcolm Brinded told Shell’s annual general meeting in the Hague, which was relayed to London via video link.

Brinded said he hoped the situation would improve to the point where Shell could restart work on capturing natural gas, which is usually flared as waste gas, for commercial use, which was halted due to the violence.
