WASHINGTON – A U.S. unit of Royal Dutch Shell PLC spent more than $587,000 to lobby the federal government on chemical site security, energy taxes and other issues in the first quarter of the year.

Shell Oil Co. also lobbied on legislation dealing with access to federal lands, oil shale leases, climate change, false claims and attorney-client privilege, and more, according to the form posted online April 21 by the House clerk’s office.

The Houston-based company spent nearly $2.8 million to lobby the federal government in 2007.

Besides Congress, Shell lobbied the White House, Environmental Protection Agency, as well as the departments of Commerce, Interior, Energy and others in the first three months of the year.

Elizabeth Stolpe, formerly of the Council on Environmental Quality, and Kevin O’Donovan, a former adviser to Vice President Dick Cheney, were among those lobbying on the company’s behalf.
