Shell cleared of deliberate pollution

Shell cleared of deliberate pollution

Thursday 28 August 2008

Shell has been cleared of breaking three environmental regulations in 2004 at its plant in Moerdijk by a court in Breda, news agency ANP reports.

In one case Shell failed to alert the authorities to a chemical leak within the legal time limit because the leak was originally thought to be much smaller. In two other cases, too many chemicals were emitted into the plant’s waste water.

The court ruled that Shell had not deliberately broken the law in all three cases. The company had been facing a €35,000 fine, ANP reported.
