WASHINGTON Federal workers in Lakewood who oversee offshore oil and gas drilling had sex and used drugs with energy company employees, provided information to industry favorites, and accepted thousands of dollars in gifts while handling contracts worth billions of dollars, investigators said Wednesday.
Employees at the Minerals Management Service, including the former head of the Lakewood division, repeatedly and flagrantly violated ethics rules over a four-year period, the Interior Department’s inspector general said in three reports.

WASHINGTON — Employees of the federal agency that last year collected more than $11 billion in royalties from oil and gas companies broke government rules and created a “culture of ethical failure” by allegedly accepting gifts from and having sex with industry representatives, the Interior Department’s top watchdog said Wednesday.
A report by the Interior Department’s inspector general, Earl Devaney, described a party atmosphere at the Denver office of the Minerals Management Service, a bureau of the department. Some employees of the office, which houses the department’s royalty-in-kind program, “frequently consumed alcohol at industry functions, had used cocaine and marijuana, and had sexual relations with oil and gas company representatives,” the report said, adding that “sexual relationships with prohibited sources cannot, by definition, be arms-length.”

Emergency alert for Texas as Hurricane Ike heads for state
Miami President Bush declared an emergency in Texas as Hurricane Ike headed towards the state. Evacuations were started on the coast and the President ordered federal aid to help local efforts to prepare for the hurricane, which killed 100 people in the Carribean. It is expected to reach Texas on Saturday.
Shell, the Anglo-Dutch oil giant, evacuated employees from its offshore installations yesterday when the hurricane hit the Gulf of Mexico, where many oil refineries are based.
The US will provide $10 million (£5.7 million) in aid to help Haiti to recover from the recent storms, a spokesman for the White House said. (AFP)
