Shell Job Cuts Update 9 Sept 2009

At the end of July 2009 Shell CEO Peter Voser (above) said:

A new restructuring programme – called ‘Transition 2009’ – which we announced in June, will be completed by the end of this year. This will simplify Shell, and increase personal accountabilities. The top 600 management positions in the new organisation have been announced. This has enabled us to reduce the number of senior management positions by 20%, and substantial further staff reductions are likely.

From confidential information provided by Shell insider sources, we have already published over 450 of the top management appointments, citing names and job titles.

According to information received today:

There will be a 30% cut in the Senior Executive Group.

In the next level down, Job Groups A & B will be cut by 25%.

In the next level down, Job Groups 1 & 2 will be cut by 10 to 15%

We further understand that it has already been decided that all within JG2 and above will be required to reapply for their jobs. Voser has described the policy of asking staff to reapply for their jobs as “an interesting exercise because we could really select those we are keen on”.  Some might consider his comment to be unfortunate.

We are in possession of a confidential high level Shell/Motiva internal email revealing business plan information, including job cuts, at Motiva Norco and Shell Norco. The email is from Tom Purves, Vice President Manufacturing Gulf Coast.  It was sent on Saturday August 29, 2009 at 1.04pm. The email will be published here on 10 September unless Shell/Motiva obtains an injunction to prevent it.
