NEW ORLEANS — Over six days in May, far from the familiar choreography of Washington hearings, federal investigators grilled workers involved in the Deepwater Horizon disaster in a chilly, sterile conference room at a hotel near the airport here.

The six-member panel of Coast Guard and Minerals Management Service officials pressed for answers about what occurred on the rig on April 20 before it exploded. They wanted to know who was in charge, and heard conflicting answers. read more

Iran Ends Talks With Shell, Repsol on South Pars Gas Project

June 6 (Bloomberg) — Iran ended talks with Royal Dutch Shell Plc and Repsol YPF SA about developing two phases of its South Pars natural-gas field and will award the rights instead to an Iranian group, the state-run Mehr news agency reported.

Oil Minister Masoud Mir-Kazemi “has ordered an end to talks with Shell and Repsol over development of phases 13 and 14 of the South Pars gas field,” Mehr reported late yesterday. South Pars, which Iran shares with neighboring Qatar, contains the world’s largest gas deposit. read more

Distraction can lead to disaster: Bollywood folly by silent Transocean boss Steven Newman

Seeing Steven Newman performing a bollywood dance does not bode very well for Transocean. Nearly 15 years ago the CMD of Shell danced the Macarena and soon after RDS went into mortal decline. Chiefs of large corporations must remain focussed and not become sun kings surrounded with sycophants. They do represent their corporations in words and actions. Dancing the macarena or making bollywood moves has nothing to do with the core business of either company!

They are not the usual images of a buttoned-down oil industry executive honouring employees at a corporate gathering. But in the video posted on the Transocean website, Steven Newman performs an impressive Bollywood dance routine accompanied by four scantily-clad women.

The American chief executive of the world’s biggest offshore oil drilling company was fulfilling a pledge to demonstrate his dance moves if the company’s Indian division achieved top safety award targets. read more
