Corrib Gas Project: Statement by Eamonn O’Coillea’in to An Bord Pleanála hearing

Email we received from Mr Eamonn O’Coillea’in

It is absolutely unreal. The applicant for this refinery and now the finally untreated raw gas pipeline is all ready 10 years old, so the people of Erris, co Mayo , Ireland do not feel safe with the risks involved in this pipeline being built up our ocean bay and though privately owned lands that the people have strongly objected to for the last 10 years . Please help if you can. Thank you

Comment from Eamonn: Since Irish Minister Ray Burke met with Shell alone, behind closed doors, It makes one wonder about the policy’s  of the present government that gave away our natural resources, when the Irish people should have received their fair share instead of  nothing in these economic times of cut backs to hospitals, education, old peoples pensions, Christmas funds and every thing else that was cut back on…

IN HIS OWN WORDS: Extracts from the Closing Statement presented by Eamonn O’Coillea’in to an Bord Pleanála hearing on 29 September 2010 concerning the Shell Corrib Gas Project in Ireland:

Off the west coast of Ireland there are remarkable amounts of gas and oil, Trillions and trillions worth, how much is really out there?

Ireland’s Petroleum Affairs Division state that, there as much as the Middle East, more than 50 trillion cubic feet of gas and 130 Billion barrels of oil just for starters. Do the math’s $70 – $80, as high as $170 a short while back. Lets just average it @ 100 a barrel so, 130,000,000,000 x $100 =  $13,000,000,000.000

That’s right 13 Trillion Dollar$  for the oil found so far. Now the math’s for the gas, 50,000,000,000,000.x ($211.24) cubic meter Indonesian, Japan or USA ($166.55) per cubic meter, so what comes after a Trillion ? Quadrillions! And the present Irish Gov. are looking for 3-4 Billion in cutbacks to the Irish people again in this years budget , UNBELIEVABLE !

What we have seen and listened in this room for the last few weeks from the Applicant stifles our good senses, Shell being the major shareholder now want to be our friends and good neighbors.

They twisted the truth with their team of (experts), they would not answer the questions that, would really put doubt on how safe is this project. How much did you pay for a klm of pipeline ?  International standard, we were told, I asked the question, but didn’t receive an answer, when this whole process is about a pipeline being built in the bay. They basically refused to answer; Then they told us the pipeline will be ten years old when Operations start up 2012, NOT if they get planning permission. First they stated stainless steel, then carbon steel, but not how much did it cost ! I asked for proof of purchase documents, so far they have refused. This alone should NOT give them the permission that they need to put a untreated raw gas pipeline on our door steps never mind our drinking water.

Questions that were asked by the Applicant 7 or 8 times to get the answer he wanted all to hear that the few jobs are worth it no matter how safe it is, or what distress it caused to the children (our Children). Now to finish it’s an Irish story:

I stated in this room last year, that the Inspectors were the most powerful people in the room and the look I received from the Applicants Representative was of disbelief. Now I state for the Record, That, you, the Inspectors are the most powerful men and women in the history of Ireland, You have the power to change Ireland from  Borrowing to lending: With the stroke of a pen, you can change Ireland forever. Oh I almost forgot about the POOR oil and gas companies   $ 900,000,000 + per day net for Royal Dutch Shell, just alone, never mind Statoil, Mobil and  Exxon’s net worth.

Like I stated this can all change with the stroke of a pen, by you the Inspectors of this Committee. How Can this be Achieved ? TURN THIS PROJECT DOWN on the grounds of safety, as the pipes are at least ten years old and are some of the cheapest you can buy. Then make a deal with the Applicant, because Business is Business, And  In Ireland we need Great Businesses to get us out of this Black Hole that we were pushed into.

Do I have your Attention, well let me explain, It’s an Irish Story, that won’t want to be missed.

Getting to the Brown & Root of the matter is an old Texas expression, so lets try to figure it out:

I have report from the www.laweekly.com/38530, stating that the Securities and Exchange Commission has finally launched its probe into the heart of the complicated scandal that is; Shells 6 Billion gas-liquefaction factory which involves an international bribery fund of  $180 MILLON slush fund. Which is a crime in most Countries by the way:

Although the investigation is still on going I believe !!

Judge Renaud Van Ruymbeke is no stranger to the unsavory world of oil-and-gas politics unearthed by the existence of the $ 180 MILLION fund now being investigated by the SEC. He made his name investigating a  series of corruption scandals in which politicians of both right and left and were convicted-including a former cabinet member has been sent to prison for five years,  while investigating public officials for corruption and bribery. It makes me wonder what happen in Ireland?

Did he investigate Former Minister Ray Burke, as he also went to prison for corruption: I’ve submitted the report to  Chairman Nolan only, as it is his committee to decide what will be given and not given to the Applicant. Lets move on.

Dr.Saro-Wiwa stated that Shell knows that they are gassing the community and no company in this world should be allowed to gas its community.

Hilton Kelly stated ’The Shell company is like a big octopus. They have their hands on every business in the community and if they do not like something that someone says or does, many people are intimidated and are afraid to speak out. I was not afraid to speak out and research.

But then again, I was severely beaten and crippled and I am now permanently disabled, for taking photographs of the protest 10th of November 2006 by the Gardia GAA Foot Ball club that Shells sponsors fully. That day almost cost me my life! With a spinal injury, and no feelings in my lower legs, that is why after four years I still need crutches to drag myself around!!

But lets get back to the Brown and Root of some of the problems with this safe pipeline:

Another Shell was found by a skin diver 16 September 2010, It was a badly corroded Shell , which contained a detonator and was taken to a nearby field and disposed of by a controlled explosion, if that hit a untreated gas pipeline , What would happen to the people of Erris, we would never know what happened to us in this area.

No Pipeline is 100 % Safe like the Applicant states.

Remember the Stockholm Declaration?,

Man has the fundamental right to a healthy  Environment.

Principle 1: Human beings re at the center of concerns for sustainable development. They are entitled to a healthy and productive life in harmony with nature.

Principle 2: States have, in accordance with the charter of the United Nations and the principles of international law, the sovereign right to exploit their own resources pursuant to their own environment and developmental policies, and the responsibility  to ensure that activities within their
Jurisdiction or control and do not cause damage to the   environment.  Well ; until the Irish Ministers changed the law$ to $uite whom ? Not the people who have to suffer by living next to such places or pipelines.

Principle 10: Environmental Issues are best handled with consent with the local population !! Not with a school principal from Rossport  who is set up, on, I believe is 10 committees receiving funds from the Applicant, or a priest from Belmullet who is charge of the very large school funds committee . $o once again, this way, they make you think its legal, but not morally legal to drive a wedge into the heart of the community  and make the population divided. I don not disagree with the Educational grants, just the way it split’s the people onto 2 different sides!!
That’s not consulting with the local people is it : ? :

Sometimes life is not fair, but this is unbelievable, what has happened to the  people of Erris, my family has also suffered greatly. First I was brutally assaulted and almost died, lying on the road for over 2 hours.

When The Dr. forced me to make a complaint of the Garda who assaulted me; the Dr. then refused medical treatment, his hands were tied he told me as he pushed me out of his  office. I was then charged with a summons for sec21, but members of the Garda completely changed what was in their written statements in the case against me. The Judge dismissed the case after, almost 2 years of going to court, stating that the case was the most confusing one she has ever heard and the only one Guilty was the deep drain on the side of the Bellinaboy Road !*!*! Lets get to the real story behind this and many others…

IT’S up to the planning Board Now, That decides the fate, Health of Its People and Environment of Erris co Mayo,Ireland, My sincere Thanks to all the People of Erris and the world beyond that are trying to save this area from the risks from an untreated gas Refinery;

A Carbon Steel pipeline cost as much as 1.2 million per klm and the cheapest stainless steal; cost 50 thousand a klm, I asked and asked and asked, But the Applicant would only state, International standard. Looking up on the web, the Strongest steel , then went into the file to find steel pipelines, SO when this Pipeline up our Bay is the finally part of the connecting pipelines and the Applicant would not answer ! It is unbelievable the Applicants were not asked by the Inspectors to produce purchase documents to prove once and for ALL. How Safe Would their pipe really BE ! 10 years Old Already, Not Very Safe ! =========-==========
