LAGOS, Nigeria Royal Dutch Shell PLC is considering $4 billion worth of onshore projects in Nigeria to help capture natural gas currently burning at oil wells that contribute to global warming and can sicken those living nearby, the company’s CEO said Wednesday.
CEO Peter Voser also said Shell’s oil production rose to about 800,000 barrels a day in 2011, up after years of militant activity in the country’s Niger Delta cut into output.
Royal Dutch Shell Plc (RDSA) said its speeding up work on a project to capture natural gas from oilfields in southern Iraq and that it has signed an initial agreement to develop a petrochemical plant based on ethane.
All hands on deck to catch up with time lost after more than a year of negotiations to sign the $17 billion gas-capture agreement ended in November, Mounir Bouaziz, Shells Middle East vice president for new business, said today at a conference in Istanbul.
Iraq is now flaring gas produced in association with crude oil because it lacks the infrastructure to use it as fuel for electricity plants or feedstock for the petrochemical industry.

TOKYO, April 18 (Reuters) – Japan’s top buyer of Iranian crude Showa Shell Sekiyu KK has renewed its annual oil purchase deal with Iran but cut the volume in line with other Japanese refiners to comply with U.S. sanctions, trade sources said on Wednesday.
The cuts come even after the United States in March exempted Japan and 10 other EU nations from sanctions due to take effect in July because they have significantly cut purchases of Iranian oil. Soon after receiving the exemption, Finance Minister Jun Azumi said Japan would continue to cut imports of Iranian oil.

Although there has been some progress in implementing the Commissions recommendations concerning frontier areas, we feel strongly that additional work must be done to understand the ecosystems of the Arctic and to establish the infrastructure necessary to protect this vulnerable and valuable region.
Friday is the second anniversary of the explosion at BPs Deepwater Horizon rig that killed 11 workers and spilled upwards of five million barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico. Thanks partly to natures resilience, some progress has been made. The gulf is open to fishing, beaches are mostly clean and President Obama has resurrected an ambitious oil exploration plan that he shelved immediately after the spill.
But the healing from this extraordinary act of corporate carelessness is far from complete, and there is important work to be done to minimize the chances that such a disaster will happen again. Here are central issues that remain unresolved:
