Shell’s two drilling vessels and 35 support vessels earmarked for drilling in the Beaufort and Chukchi seas this year are either in Alaska or are on their way to the state, Shell Chief Financial Officer Simon Henry told financial analysts on April 27 during a question and answer session following the company’s presentation on its first quarter 2012 results.

“It’s a huge logistical exercise,” Henry said. read more

Shell, PetroChina JV Australia LNG faces big cost overrun – source

By Charlie Zhu and Rebekah Kebede

HONG KONG/PERTH | Fri May 4, 2012 7:57am BST

(Reuters) – The cost of Royal Dutch Shell (RDSa.L) and PetroChina‘s 0857.K Australian joint venture LNG may rise as much as 50 percent from initial estimates, which could force the companies to delay development, a source close to the project said on Friday.

Arrow LNG is one of four on Australia’s east coast that aim to pump gas from coal seams to export facilities. The estimated investment for all the projects is rising rapidly from the initial price tag of around $70 billion (43 billion pounds). read more

Shell wants judge to uphold permits

Shell wants judge to uphold permits

May 4, 2012 JUNEAU, Alaska — Subsidiaries of Shell Oil Co. trying to head off challenges to permits that put them one step closer to exploratory drilling off Alaska’s northern shores.

Shell Gulf of Mexico Inc. and Shell Offshore Inc. have asked a federal judge to rule that the National Marine Fisheries Service properly issued harassment authorizations for whales and seals. A spokesman for Shell Alaska has said that the permits provide authorization to work near the animals as long as the impact is minimal.

Attorney Kyle Parker, in a filing dated Wednesday, says the seasonal nature of Shell’s exploration work, scheduled to begin this summer, along with what he calls the extensive and time-consuming permitting process leaves the authorizations vulnerable to legal maneuvers that could restrict Shell’s ability to use them.

Royal Dutch Shell PLC shuts down major pipeline running in Nigeria; blames thefts for breaks

Royal Dutch Shell PLC shuts down major pipeline running in Nigeria; blames thefts for breaks

By Associated Press, Updated: Friday, May 4, 5:23 PM

LAGOS, Nigeria — Royal Dutch Shell PLC says it has shut down a major pipeline running through Nigeria’s oil-rich southern delta because it had been repeatedly targeted by thieves.

Shell issued a statement late Friday saying the shutdown would cut off production of about 60,000 barrels of oil a day from its Nigerian subsidiary. It said thieves have repeatedly cut into its Nembe Creek Trunkline, causing damage and leaks in the area.

Shell produced about 974,000 barrels of oil a day in 2011 in Nigeria. It declared a “force majeure” warning — meaning it is impossible for the company to cover the promised supply from the field.

Though militancy in the region has dropped since a 2009 amnesty program, foreign firms say oil thefts from pipelines have risen dramatically. read more

Greenpeace activists held after they board Shell icebreaker

By Agence France-Presse: Thu, May 03 2012 at 2:37 PM EST

Swedish police said they arrested six Greenpeace activists who boarded an icebreaker in the Baltic Sea Thursday in a bid to block plans by Anglo Dutch giant Shell to drill for oil in the Arctic.

The activists, who boarded the Finnish icebreaker Nordica, were arrested for “aggravated trespassing and criminal conversion,” police said in a statement.

The Nordica is under contract to Shell with another icebreaker, the Fennica, to provide support for an operation to drill five exploratory wells in the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas respectively, Greenpeace says. read more

ComputerWeekly.com: Shell IT staff will be well placed to find new jobs

By Daniel Thomas

Tuesday 4 May 2004

Shell IT staff who leave as a result of the company’s plans to cut thousands of jobs in its technology division will be well placed to find employment, according to recruitment consultants.

The oil giant last week announced plans to cut thousands of IT jobs, eliminate unnecessary software applications and standardise hardware in an attempt to cut its technology budget by £475m and improve overall efficiency.

The global IT workforce at Shell, which totals 9,300, will fall by between 20% and 30% by 2006, with several hundred UK IT jobs at risk. However, worried staff should remain optimistic, said John Ellis, director of recruitment consultancy Ellis Holley Maxwell.

Greenpeace Nordic intercepts Shell icebreaker to thwart Arctic drilling

Greenpeace Nordic intercepts Shell icebreaker to thwart Arctic drilling

May 3, 2012

Öland, Sweden, 3 May 2012 – Greenpeace Nordic activists today intercepted at open sea and boarded a Shell-contracted icebreaker, the Nordica, to continue its protest against the oil major’s destructive plans to start drilling in the pristine Arctic region.

At about 04:20 six activists from five different countries boarded the Nordica in Swedish waters south of Öland, scaled the ship and have locked themselves down throughout the ship. They are demanding that Shell abandons its controversial plans to drill in the fragile Arctic.

“Shell’s reckless plans to start drilling for oil in the Arctic pose an unacceptable threat to a unique place on earth,” said Greenpeace Nordic Arctic campaigner eco-toxicologist Therese Jacobson. “We are standing at a crossroads. A choice needs to be made to protect the Arctic or allow Shell and other oil greedy companies to destroy this precious region. The choice is clear, we must save the Arctic.” read more
