Shell Oil and pornography

Shell Oil is the only major oil company that allows porn to be sold by independent retailers who sell branded gasoline

Shell Oil Company is the first and only major oil company to define Penthouse and Playboy magazines as “not pornographic.” Shell Oil Company made this policy change to allow Circle K Stores to sell pornographic magazines at two hundred forty (240) independent Shell branded stores that Circle K recently purchased.

Florida Family Association (FFA) has worked since 1997 to influence every major oil company to prohibit their branded independent stores from selling pornography. FFA influenced BP-Amoco, Exxon-Mobil, Chevron-Texaco, Citgo, Marathon, Murphy and Sunoco to add restrictions to their marketing agreements with independent retailers to prohibit the sale of pornography. read more

Shell to start pumping gas at southern Iraq project

BAGHDAD | Wed Jul 11, 2012 12:10pm EDT

(Reuters) – Royal Dutch Shell (RDSa.L) plans to start pumping gas from its gas joint venture in southern Iraq in the next three weeks at 60 million cubic feet per day, Iraq said on Wednesday.

Shell and Mitsubishi Corporation (8058.T) signed a $17 billion deal with Iraq last November to capture flared gas at the country’s southern oilfields, which burn off more than 700 million cubic feet of gas per day.

Hans Nijkamp, Shell vice-president and head of the company’s Iraq projects, told Iraq Deputy Prime Minister for Energy Hussain al-Shahristani that output would be increased by a further 40 million cubic feet a day several weeks after pumping starts, a statement from Shahristani’s office said. read more

Five Irish citizens jailed indefinitely at Shell’s behest

FROM OUR JULY 2005 SHELL NEWS ARCHIVE… SHELL CORRIB GAS PROJECT

Western People: If this pipeline is so safe why is no public body responsible for it

“On application from counsel for Shell the judge awarded the company an order for costs.”: “The reality is that natural gas pipelines do and have exploded. This fact is well documented. As recently as July 2004 a Shell operated gas pipeline close to Brussels fractured, the resulting explosion killed 21 people including firefighters, and devastated a number of buildings.”

The residents of Rossport have every reason to feel concerned about a gas pipeline that breaks all the usual industrial rules, writes Mike Cunningham.

Last Wednesday’s High Court action by Shell which culminated in the committal to prison of five Erris residents on a charge of contempt of court was indeed a disturbing state of affairs to have witnessed at first hand.

The five, four local landowners, Mr. Philip McGrath, Mr. Vincent McGrath, Mr. Brendan Philbin, Mr. Willie Corduff from Rossport and retired school teacher Mr. Micheál Ó Seighín from Ceathrú Thaidhg were jailed indefinitely for breaching a High Court order granted to Shell prohibiting them from protesting and impeding works on the route of the Corrib high pressure gas pipeline through the defendants lands at Rossport. read more

LA Times Editorial: Shell’s Arctic gamble

The plan by Shell Alaska to drill for oil in the Beaufort and Chukchi seas poses considerable risks. …what does seem clear is that neither Shell nor the government has taken the necessary steps to assure the public that a catastrophe can be avoided…

July 11, 2012

The proposal by Shell Alaska to drill for oil in the Beaufort and Chukchi seas of the Arctic sounded from the start like a dangerous environmental prospect in a particularly fragile ecosystem. The weather provides only a brief window of opportunity for oil exploration before winter ice makes it too hazardous. Booms and skimmers, the traditional methods of containing an oil spill on the water’s surface, are much less effective in those choppy, ice-flecked seas, and the usual emergency support — equipment, docks and Coast Guard vessels — are far away. read more

By Sarah Kent

LONDON–Royal Dutch Shell PLC (RDSB.LN) said Wednesday it has agreed to acquire Norwegian liquefied natural gas producer and distributor, Gasnor, for $74 million.

Shell said the acquisition will help establish a sales and marketing arm for transport fuel made from LNG, ahead of new environmental regulations due to come into force in 2015 that will require lower levels of emissions of pollutants from shipping traffic in the Baltic Sea, English Channel and North Sea. read more

Shell WindEnergy exits Bear River wind project

The Times-Standard Posted:   07/10/2012 03:45:33 PM PDT

Shell WindEnergy Inc. announced today that the company is opting to exit the Bear River wind project that has been in the works for years.

A press release from the company states it’s withdrawing from the project due to “unfavorable market conditions and issues pertaining to the transportation logistics” of getting wind turbines into Humboldt County.

The proposed 50-megawatt project would’ve used 25 wind turbines along the ridge south of Ferndale to produce an alternative energy wind farm. Getting the wind turbines into the county would’ve involved the construction of some five miles of road, according to a previous county notice. read more

Arctic drilling: Groups challenge Shell oil spill response plans

By Kim Murphy: July 9, 2012, 6:41 p.m.

SEATTLE — In an effort to hold oil companies to a higher standard in the Arctic Ocean, a coalition of conservation groups announced Monday that  they are suing to challenge the federal government’s approval of oil spill cleanup plans for Shell Alaska’s upcoming operations in the Beaufort and Chukchi seas.

The lawsuit, which is being filed in U.S. District Court in Anchorage, seeks to invoke the Oil Pollution Act of 1990, a tough law passed in the wake of the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill. That law sets a high bar for offshore oil and gas operations — a bar that Shell officials say they are already meeting for exploratory drilling scheduled to get underway in August. read more
