A $30 Billion Hole in the Caspian Sea?

Screen Shot 2013-01-31 at 16.35.00

For more than a decade, the promised bonanza from Kazakhstan’s giant offshore Kashagan oil field has been a costly mirage for its developers. And the wait still isn’t over.

The companies backing the project—which include Exxon Mobil Corp., Eni Spa and Royal Dutch Shell PLC—in March missed the startup date Eni predicted last year. And now, after a decade of work and more than $30 billion in expenses, it isn’t clear when one of the world’s biggest untapped fields will produce its first drop of oil. read more

SHELL CUT REFINERY GAS PIPE THEY THOUGHT WAS A WATER PIPE

Screen Shot 2013-03-05 at 15.42.20News release – Issued by Shell to Sea Friday 19th April 2013

— Latest incident further example of Shell as “Neighbour from Hell” —

Shell has admitted that on Monday, the 8th April, they had to vent all the nitrogen currently in the gas pipes at the Bellanaboy refinery, after they mistakenly cut a gas pipe. Shell claim the reason for this was the gas pipe was mistaken for a water pipe in the refinery and was cut.  The gas pipes on the refinery site are currently filled with nitrogen to inhibit corrosion.   The incident only came to light because a local resident contacted Midwest Radio with details of the incident.   Shell confirmed the incident took place one week after the event. Esther Kiobel still intent on seeking justice

Screen Shot 2013-04-19 at 11.48.26After Esther Kiobel recently sought my advice, anticipating the possible decision that has just been announced, I put her into contact with a Dutch law firm with a view to instigating a lawsuit against Royal Dutch Shell in the Netherlands. Hopefully that process is now underway.

Esther Kiobel (right) is a regular visitor to this website and has made some very much appreciated comments about our activities.

Esther, who alleges that her husband Barinem Kiobel was executed by the Nigerian regime with the alleged backing of Shell, has correctly described Shell as an evil corporation.  read more

The Wrong Decision for Human Rights

Legal and Policy Associate, International Corporate Accountability Roundtable: Posted: 04/18/2013 7:42 pm

Yesterday the Supreme Court ruled in Kiobel v. Royal Dutch Petroleum (Shell) that Esther Kiobel may not proceed in her case against Shell for aiding and abetting in the torture and murder of her husband. In addition to setting back Esther’s quest for justice, the Court’s decision has two major effects: It limits accountability for gross human rights abuse committed abroad and it gives foreign corporations preferential treatment over domestic businesses.

In 1995, Dr. Barinem Kiobel was kidnapped, tortured, and executed by hanging following a trial before a military tribunal that was internationally denounced and widely condemned as a sham along with eight other people. Dr. Kiobel was a leader of a non-violent organization that protested Shell’s polluting of the land in the Ogoni region of Nigeria. To quash the protest, Shell allegedly sent corporate officers to meet with the Nigerian government and provided funding and training to the Nigerian military for “security operations” that resulted in years of violent abuse, including harassment, beatings, rape, torture and ultimately death. read more

More allegations about Shell Corrib Gas Project

Screen Shot 2013-03-05 at 15.42.20“On the Corrib gas terminal Shell are employing people to do the work of industrial fitters who are not qualified… so are putting the safety of the terminal at risk. The latest breach in health and safety was on Monday the 8th of April, a worker employed as a fitter without the necessary papers worked on cutting pipes… he cut through a live nitrogen pipe and put many lives at risk. Shell has set up an incident room but it is a smokescreen..:” “The drinking culture on the site has also become a big problem…” (*ANOTHER BOOZE ALLEGATION ASSOCIATED WITH THE CONTROVERSIAL PROJECT?)

Shell Ireland says incident at Bellanaboy gas terminal last week did not pose any danger to the site

An incident that occurred at the Corrib gas terminal at Bellanaboy in North Mayo last Monday has been described by Shell as posing no danger to the environment

A pipe containing nitrogen was cut by mistake but the company says all nitrogen on the site was vented off as a precaution

Teresa O’Malley has more details…

As Shell’s Corrib Gas terminal at Bellanaboy is almost completed, the site is said to be in a state of preservation and during this phase of development low pressure nitrogen is pushed through the gas pipes to prevent any corrosion read more
