‘On the Horizon’ will investigate the background of the oil industry in Ireland

Screen Shot 2013-06-13 at 18.18.02I am a documentary film-maker based in the West of Ireland, and am looking to fund a follow-on to my last, and first, feature documentary, ‘The Pipe’, which has won numerous awards and been broadcast in 25 countries on 4 continents.  While filming ‘The Pipe’ (supported by TG4 and IFB), a story about the community at the centre of the Corrib Gas controversy, I began to delve into the wider story behind Ireland’s Oil & Gas. Why would a small sovereign State put all its resources, both security, legal and political, at the behest of the worlds most powerful oil companies? Why was there very little appetite among the mainstream media to critically examine the story of Ireland’s Oil & Gas?On the Horizon read more

BEIJING, June 13 | Thu Jun 13, 2013 7:01am EDT

(Reuters) – Royal Dutch Shell has signed a letter of intent with a private Chinese energy firm to build a liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal in east China, a Shell China official said on Thursday.

The pact, though non-binding, marks a rare cooperation on a potentially multibillion-dollar investment between a global energy company and a local private firm in China’s state-dominated energy sector.

“Shell and Guanghui Energy have signed a non-binding Letter of Intent that confirms the intention of the two parties to explore the possibility of developing a LNG import terminal project in Qidong, Jiangsu province,” Chen Xiaoni, a spokeswoman for Shell Companies China, wrote in an email. read more

Oil & Energy Minister Ola Borten Moe splashed more oil on the simmering battle over the Barents Sea this week when he announced the award of 20 new oil production licenses in the area. He also awarded four more in the Norwegian Sea, and environmentalists were not pleased.

Some of the bullish Norwegian oil minister’s awards allow oil companies to venture closer to the sensitive Arctic waters around Svalbard, and that’s a highly controversial move. Oil companies won permission to look for new sources of oil and gas above 74-degrees latitude and not only environmental groups have been opposed to that. Newspaper Aftenposten noted that countries including Great Britain and Russia have erlier expressed that a border in principle runs along the 74-degree mark. Areas beyond that are in the so-called “Svalbard box” which they don’t think Norway has the right to manage alone. read more
