The vice president of Shell’s UK and Ireland Upstream operations has said the oil major is “disappointed” after both Unite and RMT unions voted in support of strike action.

The move could mark the first industrial action of its kind in a generation.

It comes after more than 200 workers were balloted on whether they would support either strike action or action short of a strike.

Wood Group has also said it is “disappointed” by the decision of its staff.

Meanwhile, job posting have emerged online bases on a week-by-week rolling contract with Unite the union hitting out at what it sees as a move by the company to supply back-up staff in the wake of potential industrial action.

Paul Goodfellow, Shell UK and Ireland Upstream vice president, said:“We are disappointed that the dispute has reached this stage. We hope that Wood Group’s employees and management can resolve their issues. Our priority is to ensure that the safety of our people and assets will not be compromised during any industrial action.”
