U.S. oil majors fall behind on climate, European lead

Major European oil companies are making major efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to fight climate change. American majors are dragging their behinds.

Royal Dutch Shell pledged Tuesday to slash carbon emission by 50 percent and boost investment in clean, renewable energy. CEO Ben van Beurden promised to spend at least $2 billion on on wind power, biofuels and electric cars, about the same amount it will spend on shale oil.

“It is making sure that the products within society have an overall lower carbon footprint,” Beurden told investors, according to the Guardian newspaper. “That is the long-term way of making sure our business remains a relevant business in the face of the energy transition.” read more

Women’s average pay at Shell in UK a fifth less than men’s

Ron Bousso: NOVEMBER 30, 2017

LONDON (Reuters) – Female employees of Royal Dutch Shell in Britain earned on average 22 percent less than male colleagues, the oil and gas firm said on Thursday, a difference that is more than double the national average.

The Anglo-Dutch company, which employs more than 5,000 people in Britain, of which two thirds are men, said the gap was due to fewer women holding senior leadership positions and fewer women working in technical roles such as operating offshore rigs, or trading roles that attract higher pay. read more

Shell Midstream buying pipelines, terminals for $825m

Houston’s Shell Midstream Partners is going on a buying spree, acquiring $825 million worth of pipelines and terminals from its Royal Dutch Shell parent.

Written by

The deals designed to beef up the three-year-old Shell Midstream business give the Houston pipelines firm more ownership in Gulf Coast and Gulf of Mexico pipelines, as well as a slew of terminals from the Houston area to Washington state.

The drop-down acquisitions from the parent Shell and other Shell subsidiaries give Shell Midstream majority ownership of the Mars and Odyssey oil pipelines in the Gulf of Mexico. Shell Midstream already owned 49 percent stakes in the pipelines and the deal ups those stakes to at least 71 percent. read more

Shell damps down Prelude LNG expectations

by Angela Macdonald-Smith: Nov 29, 2017

Royal Dutch Shell has sewn doubt in the market about an early 2018 start-up of the oil major’s innovative Prelude floating LNG project off the coast of north-west Australia, with chief executive Ben van Beurden signalling that the project will only start contributing noticeably to cash flow in 2019.

While the ramp-up of the $US54 billion (71 billion) Gorgon LNG project in Western Australia was named by Mr van Beurden as among projects named to help grow cash flows next year, Prelude was included in the later batch. read more

Summary

  • Royal Dutch Shell held its annual analyst day earlier this week.
  • Management expects to generate at least $25 billion in excess cash flow by 2019.

Amnesty wants probe into Shell’s alleged role in 1990s Nigeria violence

Esther Kiobel, the widow of one of the nine Ogoni activists

Reporting by Libby George; Editing by Edmund Blair: NOVEMBER 28, 2017

LONDON/LAGOS (Reuters) – Amnesty International has called for a criminal investigation into the alleged role of Royal Dutch Shell in human rights abuses in Nigeria’s oil-rich Ogoniland in the 1990s, accusations the Anglo-Dutch oil company has denied. The rights group urged the British, Dutch and Nigerian governments carry out probes in a report that it said included evidence showing Shell’s involvement in suppression of protesters by the military government in the 1990s. Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited (SPDC) said the allegations were “false and without merit”. FULL ARTICLE read more

Dutch Public Prosecution Service looks at Amnesty dossier on Shell Nigeria

ENGLISH TRANSLATION (GOOGLE TRANSLATE) OF A DUTCH ARTICLE PUBLISHED BY NU.nl

Published: 28 November 2017 18:44 Last update: November 28, 2017 9:45

The Public Prosecution Service (OM) will look at the file Amnesty International has made about the role of Shell in Nigeria. According to the human rights organization, Shell was actively involved in violence against the Ogoni population in Nigeria. Amnesty International has called on Nigeria, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands to conduct a criminal investigation into the role of Shell. “We are going to study the file very seriously and if we see a reason we start an investigation”, a spokesperson for the Public Prosecution Service (OM) reacts. According to the human rights organization, Shell’s internal documents and testimonies show that the oil company repeatedly encouraged the Nigerian army to take action against protests from the Ogoni. Residents of Ogoniland revolted after oil spills from Shell had caused enormous environmental damage. According to Amnesty, Shell asked a paramilitary police unit in 1990 for ‘protection’ against protests on which agents attacked the village of Umuechem and killed at least eighty people. In later years, requests for assistance from the company also led to bloodshed. The Shell summit would have been aware of this violence, but it did not stop the requests, Amnesty claims, which says to have internal documents that prove it.

Declaration

If the Public Prosecution Service does not institute an investigation, Amnesty will file a report. The human rights organization is currently working on a criminal file, which in due course can be given to the Public Prosecution Service. When that dossier is ready, the organization does not know.

Shell has always denied having been involved in human rights violations. “Shell has not encouraged or encouraged violence. We believe that the facts will clearly show that Shell was not responsible for those tragic events. read more

Feds approve first oil exploration in Arctic federal waters since Shell

It’s the first oil exploration in Arctic federal waters since Shell abandoned its campaign in 2015.

The company, Eni, aims to begin drilling in December. It will operate from an existing man-made gravel island called Spy Island. Spy Island is about three miles offshore, in state waters west of Prudhoe Bay.

The prospect is about four miles away from the island, so Eni plans to use extended-reach drilling. According to the company, it will be be the longest extended-reach well in Alaska. read more

Investors’ fortunes transformed as Shell restores cash dividend

Royal Dutch Shell investors reaped the rewards of its “transformation” yesterday when it said that it would resume paying its entire $16 billion annual dividend in cash and would press ahead with at least $25 billion of share buybacks by 2020.

Europe’s biggest listed energy company has been saving cash over the past two and a half years by paying about a quarter of its dividend in the form of new shares, part of a strategy to help it to cope with the longest sustained downturn in oil prices for a generation. read more

Shell, to Cut Carbon Output, Will Be Less of an Oil Company

By Nov. 28, 2017

Bowing to pressure from shareholders and the Paris international climate accord, Royal Dutch Shell pledged on Tuesday to increase its investment in renewable fuels and to cut its carbon emissions in half by 2050. Shell and other big oil companies have moved only sporadically over the last decade toward greater production of wind and solar energy. Now there are signs of a commitment to take climate change more seriously. In comments to investors, Ben van Beurden, Shell’s chief executive, said that from 2018 to 2020, the company’s new-energies division would spend up to $2 billion a year on renewable energy sources like wind, solar and hydrogen power and on electric-car charging stations.
