NAM Measurement and Control Protocol Groningen in Response to Unintentionally Induced Earthquakes (NAM IS AN EXXON/SHELL JOINT VENTURE COMPANY)

The Dutch State Supervision of Mines (SSM) and the Dutch Minister of Economic Affairs last summer approved the Measurement and Control Protocol (MRP) for the Groningen gas field. NAM drew up this protocol with the aim of limiting the seismic risk of gas extraction in Groningen as much as possible. The protocol indicates how gas extraction is adjusted when earthquakes give rise to it. Safety is central.

Dashboard
The dashboard at the MRP Groningen (see illustration) shows at a glance the current state of affairs regarding seismicity in the Groningen gas field. This dashboard indicates with arrows whether and if so a limit value is exceeded. The MRP describes the actions that NAM subsequently undertakes. This could, for example, lead to an advice to the SSM regulator to reduce gas extraction.

The MRP Groningen dashboard can be found at the Facts and Figures on NAM.nl, in the section Earthquakes.
