NAM claims backing over risks posed by gas extraction under the Wadden Sea

Printed below is an English translation of information published today by Nederlandse Aardolie Maatschappij BV (NAM), a joint venture between Royal Dutch Shell and ExxonMobil each owning a 50% share in the company responsible for the earthquake prone Groningen Gas Field and consequential potential bill for untold billions in damages.

SSM approved the Wadden Sea subsidence study

The Dutch State Supervision of Mines (SSM) has approved the follow-up study on subsidence by gas extraction under the Wadden Sea. The SSM Decree underlines the significance of this study and models that enable responsible gas extraction in the Wadden Sea Region.

With the availability of measurements, the uncertainty decreases and any risks remain manageable, says SSM. ‘NAM has done a study that offers what is currently scientifically possible.’

Responsible and safe

NAM is confident that in the coming decades, in close consultation with regional authorities and scientific partners, it will be able to continue gas production in a safe and responsible manner. The Measurement & Control cycle and the ‘hand on the tap principle’ are important conditions in this respect.

Research

The report approved by SSM is the end result of an extensive scientific study into the behavior of soil subsidence in the Wadden Sea: the Long Term Subsidence (LTS) study. In particular, the long-term effects have been extensively investigated, with a better insight into the reliability of the predicted subsidence. The study was carried out in close collaboration with, among others, Delft University of Technology, Utrecht University and TNO.
