Corrupt bunch of liars and cheats at Shell

John Donovan 1984

By John Donovan

My company Don Marketing supplied the spectacularly successful Shell Make Money game that ran on Shell forecourts during 1984/5 in a number of countries, including the UK.

Years later, Shell deliberately ignored the signed confirmation of agreement below while surreptitiously producing a subsequent flawed Shell Make Money without our knowledge or consent.

Shell executives blatantly lied about what was going on but was forced to settle the matter after Don Marketing issued a High Court Writ.

I still have the original version of the Shell letter and even the franked dated envelope it was received in. That was fortunate because Shell later alleged that documents provided within our discovery were fake (false allegations Shell subsequently withdrew).

We later found out that Shell had withheld materially important documents it was legally obliged to supply within the same discovery process.

Paul King, the Shell executive who signed the letter had no involvement in the ruthless deceit. He had already left the company because of its depressing lack of ethics. As he pointed out in writing at the time of his resignation, Shell was no longer the company that he had joined.

My guess is that Mr King no longer had the stomach to continue working alongside the corrupt bunch of liars that took over Shell UK’s advertising and marketing department, aided and abetted by some members of Shell’s legal department.  Evidence is still available if Shell wishes to challenge what I am stating as fact.

All a long while ago, but nothing much seems to have changed. Corruption and fraud continues, while Shell pretends to operate on an ethical basis within its claimed business principles.

The subsequent Shell reserves scandal was described in a BBC programme as the biggest fraud in history (now superseded by OPL 245).

Ben van Beurden served as the presumably innocent private assistant of Sir Philip Watts who was forced to resign in disgrace (with an $18.5 million payoff to buy his silence) after the true sorry state of Shell’s hydrocarbon reserves had been covered-up for years. False figures had been routinely supplied to the U.S. and UK financial authorities on an annual basis.

BvB is now tainted by the Nigerian OPL 245 scandal after his off-the-cuff instruction not to cooperate with the police was recorded in a wiretapped phone conversation while a raid on Shell’s Dutch HQ was underway. In the same infamous call, he also mentioned Shell’s hiring of MI6 “people” (who represented Shell in the dastardly OPL 245 negotiations). Another unprompted utterance he must regret.

Suffice it to say that Shell’s coverup-culture, International skullduggery and appalling corruption endures.
