Voser’s claim that there are not enough talented women available is absurd given Shell’s financial and international strengths. The reality is that Shell was always run by British accountants and Dutch engineers – and it still is. And they wear suits.

The only Executive Director of Shell (as opposed to non Execs) was Linda Cook. Some saw her as a possible CEO but the reality is that as an American she was disconnected from the vast core of the Shell World about which she knew nothing and learned less. She was tough and had some credibility but when her failings became all too apparent it was often her gender that was blamed. Another more talented American woman who nearly made it was Lynn Elsenhams but again her prospects were not helped by her career history which was mostly in Shell Oil. read more

More women stalled on corporate ladder

On Aug. 8 Lynn Elsenhans, who previously worked for Royal Dutch-Shell, will take over from John Drosdick as the CEO of Sunoco, an American oil-refining giant. Meanwhile Shell’s executive director of gas and power, Linda Cook, is said to be one of two internal candidates who could replace the company’s CEO, Jeroen van der Veer, who is due to step down next year. Should she do so, she would become the first female CEO of a major oil producer.

Sunoco's new leader has a challenging road ahead as she leaves her Houston-based position running global refining for Royal Dutch Shell, an analyst said Friday.

Sunoco names Lynn Elsenhans 1st female CEO, president

Elsenhans joins the company from Shell's Shell Downstream Inc., where she has been executive vice president of global manufacturing since 2005. From 2003 to 2005, she was president of Shell Oil Co. and CEO of Shell Oil Products US.
