Thousands of oil and gas workers who migrated around the country to work in new fields for fat salaries have been laid off.
The Sierra Club, the country’s largest grassroots environmental organisation, said it was concerned about last-minute changes from the Bush administration. “They have consistently weakened protections over the last eight years, and we are encouraged that the Obama team plans to act to clean up the mess when they get into office,” the club said.
Democratic leaders had hoped to extend the drilling bans, but such a move would have risked drawing opposition from Republicans and the White House. President Bush has announced that he would allow the bans to expire at the end of September. Speaking to reporters on Friday, Marvin Odum, the head of Royal Dutch Shell PLC’s U.S. operations, acknowledged that “it is a possibility that [the ban] comes right back on.”
Everyone these days, from T. Boone Pickens to me, seems to have an energy plan, and Hofmeister is no different. His, though, has executive suite cred. He doesn’t have an interest in any particular fuel source, as Pickens does, and, as he’s quick to point out, he’s not running for office.
