Shell hatches Ithaca farm-in deal

Shell has farmed into an Ithaca Energy licence off the UK in a deal which could eventually see the Anglo-Dutch supermajor bag 100%.

The Peter Voser-led oil giant is getting a 50% interest in Ithaca’s P2048 production licence which straddles blocks 29/24, 29/25, 29/29 and 29/30 off the UK.

Shell poised to hand out Brent disposal contracts

Shell intends to award the major heavy-lift removal and onshore disposal contracts for its landmark Brent Decommissioning project — together valued at hundreds of millions of dollars — by the end of the first quarter next year.

Initially the work covers the ­removal of the topsides of three of the four Brent platforms — ­Alpha, Bravo and Delta — and the steel jacket of Brent Alpha. As much as 97% of the steel is expected to be recycled. read more

Shell may face new Alaska battle

Environmental groups are considering a challenge to a set of permits issued to Royal Dutch Shell this week for oil drilling projects off the coast of Alaska, reports have said.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced on Monday it had approved the air quality permits for the Anglo-Dutch supermajor to operate the Discoverer drillship and supporting vessels in the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas starting in 2012.

Environmental groups now say they are reviewing the EPA permits to determine whether to file a challenge with the agency’s Environmental Appeals Board (EAB), according to Dow Jones. read more

The UK Health & Safety Executive (HSE) has taken the rare step of ordering a thorough safety review at Shell’s Brent Charlie platform following two major gas leaks.

The HSE has told Shell to submit a revised safety case for the Brent Charlie platform after gas was detected on its topsides following leaks on 12 January this year and 27 September 2010, Upstream can reveal.

Shell, which took the decision itself to close the platform after the January incident, has been battling for some time to resolve technically complex issues related to the venting of gas from inside one the platform’s huge concrete legs — Column 1 (C1) — and dispersing it effectively away from the platform. read more

Qatar’s Pearl gas-to-liquids plant will come on stream by the end of next year, Saad al-Kaabi, a senior official at state-run Qatar Petroleum, said.

“That will be probably late 2010,” Al-Kaabi told reporters on the sidelines of the Petrotech conference, Reuters reported.
