Deterding Explains

TRANSLATION OF A NEWSPAPER CLIPPING ABOUT HENRI DETERDING (*ABOVE) FROM THE 20th CENTURY PRESS ARCHIVES OF THE GERMAN NATIONAL LIBRARY OF ECONOMICS

Berliner Tageblatt

2 March 1935

Deterding explains:

AMSTERDAM, March 2

At regular intervals appear since years of the Reich government with the President of the Royal Dutch Shell, Sir Henry Deterding. Also a few days ago, dissenting statements were published in which it was said that Sir Deterding was in Berlin to bargain there for a petroleum monopoly.

Deterding shall, upon request, comment on these rumours in the following terms:

“I emphatically declare that the rumours about my alleged Berlin meetings are completely invented, they keep coming up, especially in Paris, Amsterdam and other places. I suspect that they come directly from the Soviet Russian Tas Agency and are distributed with a certain tendency. My stay in Berlin, where I am 21, February d. J. arrived, served exclusively the

Tour of the big annual car show, which I visit regularly, and which I would not miss under any circumstances.

I only stayed in Berlin for hours and met no government representative there. The facts show how lying the reports of my stay in Berlin are. I would like to add that I have never, neither directly nor indirectly negotiated a German petroleum monopoly, nor will I drive, since I am in principle the opponent of all monopolies, because ultimately they must have a detrimental effect on every industry. Only in free competition can the industry thrive best.”
