Malaysia Star: World-class dialysis facility

MIRI: Senior nursing students from medical colleges in Australia will be coming to the Miri Red Crescent Kidney Dialysis Centre for their practical training.
The centre’s chairman Lee Kim Shin, who is Assistant State Minister for Infrastructure Development and Communications, made the announcement yesterday at the official opening ceremony of the RM5mil centre by Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.
“Visitors from other countries, including those from the medical profession, have acknowledged that this centre has a world-class dialysis treatment facility.
“We are making our centre here the first non-governmental dialysis centre to set up research facilities for renal failure studies.
“It will now be a place for practical attachment of third and fourth-year nursing students from Australia,” he added in his speech.
Taib praised the Miri Red Crescent Society members for their humanitarian spirit.
“Because of all of you volunteers, we had achieved much more than what the government would have been able to achieve in terms of helping the needy.
“You have rendered a good service to the community and helped the disadvantaged. There are a lot of non-governmental organisations nowadays championing human rights and environmental protection but I feel that the role you play is even more vital,” said the Miri-born chief minister.
Taib announced that he would personally donate a dialysis machine costing RM50,000 while his wife Puan Sri Laila Taib made a pledge of RM420,000 in funds.
Yesterday was also Taib’s 69th birthday.
Lee, Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr George Chan Hong Nam, the Red Crescent Society and dialysis centre’s staff surprised Taib with a birthday cake.
Shell Malaysia chairman Datuk Jon Chadwick and Petronas Sarawak general manager Ahmad Rahmad were also present. Shell had donated RM1.1mil to help build the centre while Petronas gave RM1mil.
