PETRONAS and Shell have made their fifth gas discovery off the northeast coast of Peninsular Malaysia in block PM301 and have started technical studies to develop the field.

Their joint venture company CS Mutiara Petroleum found gas with the Bunga Kesumba well in 55 m of water, which is close to the four previous discoveries Bunga Kamilia, Bunga Zetung, Bunga Anggerik and Bumi South.

Petronas and Shell have started technical studies to assess the development of these gas discoveries, with any project likely to require more than one platform.

GLOBAL SantaFe has been forced to delay the work of two of its newbuild semi-submersible rigs in the Gulf of Mexico because of defects in thruster nozzles.

The Houston-based contractor is estimating a delay of two to three months as it investigates the cause of the failures on the GSF Development Driller I and II.

It will be forced to repair the thrusters before Development Driller I can start work on BP’s Atlantis field and II can begin an exploration programme for BHP Billiton.

CHEVRON and Shell have gained access to four deepwater exploration blocks in the Carnarvon basin off northwest Australia. The blocks are on the Exmouth Plateau, a frontier part of the oil and gas basin to the west of the large Gorgon offshore project.

Both companies intend to conduct seismic surveys and drill exploratory wells in the blocks using their experience at Gorgon to find new gas reserves.

PETROFAC and Global Petroleum Resources are set to design a production platform for Addax Petroleum’s Oron development in the Gulf of Guinea in a $1.7m contract.

The two contractors will design a platform to produce 60,000 barrels of oil per day, 70 km off Nigeria in around 8 m of water. The platform will be of a similar design to the Adanga platform and should be commissioned in December 2006.

ALPHA Thames has sent out its first licence for its subsea separation technology to Perisai Petroleum Teknologi of Malaysia and formed a joint venture to market the systems in the Asia-Pacific region.
