Daily Telegraph: Fidelity shows Shell how giants can care for small investors

“Any complacency about rising standards in the City would, however, be misplaced. Shell’s half-hearted climbdown this week demonstrates that many boardroom fat cats continue to regard individual shareholders with disdain.”

Small investors are often treated shabbily by big institutions but, as our award-winning consumer champion Jessica Gorst-Williams observes, “sometimes the power of the press can help.” Her painstaking work reminds us that there is more to journalism than persecuting drug-addled pop stars and their model girlfriends.

The petroleum giant finally does the decent thing over punitive merger terms, reports Christopher Hope

Shell performed an embarrassing U-turn this week and offered new tax-free merger terms to British investors in Royal Dutch Petroleum who were refusing to agree to the unification with Shell Transport & Trading.

However, Shell is risking the wrath of British shareholders in Royal Dutch who accepted the terms of the deal and have been left with a multi-million pound tax bill. Shell said it believed it was not “appropriate” to compensate them. read more

The Wall Street Journal: Qatar to Fund Development Spree With $110 Billion in Financing

Qatar, a small but energy-rich Persian Gulf state, is offering up to $110 billion of project-financing opportunities to help fund a major development spree, including about $50 billion dedicated to oil and natural-gas projects.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Ahmed bin Jassim al-Thani, Qatar’s economy and commerce minister, is expected to unveil the package at an International Monetary Fund and World Bank meeting in Washington Saturday. The spending frenzy comes as petrodollars swell state coffers of big oil and gas producers around the world, encouraging policy makers in places like Qatar to expand their energy industries and diversify their economies while times are good. read more

TNT has launched an independent investigation into suspected “illegal acts” related to tax matters at a number of subsidiaries, fuelling concerns that the Dutch post and logistics company could face up to €400m ($480m) in fiscal claims.

Shares opened more than 8 per cent lower – stripping more than €800m from TNT’s market capitalisation – after it said the affair might damage its results and its financial position. read more

Nigerian Separatist Faces Treason Charge

THE NEW YORK TIMES: Nigerian Separatist Faces Treason Charge

“…protesting militants had taken over at least four oil flow stations run by Shell, the main producer in a country that is the world’s eighth largest oil exporter and the fifth main supplier to the United States. Shell would neither confirm nor deny facilities had been seized.”: “In 1995, writer Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight other activists from his Ogoni tribe were executed under the brutal regime of then dictator Gen. Sani Abacha. They were hanged for the murder of four political rivals, but Saro-Wiwa’s supporters say he was really targeted because he led protests against environmental damage by Shell.”

”This is the highest form of dictatorship in the land,” he told journalists outside the courtroom afterward before being whisked away in a police van. read more

Shell plans synthetic fuel production in Germany

Hindustan Times (India): Shell plans synthetic fuel production in Germany

Posted Thursday September 22, 2005

Energy major Shell has announced plans for large-scale production of synthetic diesel fuel in Germany.

Shell said it would invest several hundred million euros over the next few years in the production of synthetic diesel fuel in cooperation with the east German firm Choren.

Three factories with a total production capacity of 200,000 tonnes are being planned, reducing the German oil import bill by 100 million euros annually, according to the announcement.

“We will reduce the dependence on oil imports, improve balance of payments, boost local industries and create a completely new industrial cluster,” Choren board chairman Stephan Schueller said. read more

“SHELL E&P Ireland have promised to continue to seek means of opening dialogue with the Rossport Five in light of the refusal by the five men to accept an offer of mediation from the company”

Report by Padraic Burns

SHELL E&P Ireland have promised to continue to seek means of opening dialogue with the Rossport Five in light of the refusal by the five men to accept an offer of mediation from the company. The men, who are now 83 days in Cloverhill Prison, Dublin, last week turned down an offer by Shell to meet the men through their legal representatives.

Andy Pyle, SEPIL Managing Director, said that professional mediation offered a real opportunity for both parties to try to resolve the impasse. “Given the current deadlock, we believed that mediation could have greatly assisted both parties,” said Mr Pyle. read more

Shortages of equipment and skilled staff have added to years of underinvestment

Terry Macalister

A severe shortage of rigs, vessels and people threatens to drive up further the price of oil and is making it harder for producers to secure the future supplies needed to meet soaring energy demand.

Costs across the industry have risen sharply as oil companies compete with each other to grab every available piece of equipment to keep future drilling programmes on track. Rig hire rates have more than trebled. read more

The Wall Street Journal: Total May Use Atomic Power At Oil-Sand Project

“Shell Canada Ltd. said it isn’t considering nuclear power as part of its oil-sands plans. Rather, the company said it is looking into the possibility of turning asphaltene, very heavy oil, into gas to save on its natural-gas bill.”

Alternative to Costly Gas
Is Sought for Canada Fields;
Fear of Environmentalists

PARIS — French oil giant Total SA, amid rising oil and natural-gas prices, is considering building a nuclear power plant to extract ultraheavy oil from the vast oil-sand fields of western Canada.

This comes as oil prices — driven even higher by Hurricane Katrina and now the threat of Hurricane Rita — are removing lingering doubts about the long-term profitability of extracting the molasseslike form of oil from sand, despite the fact that the output is much more expensive to produce and to upgrade than is conventional crude. read more

Shell Nederland president sees five-fold rise in oil production costs

AFX News Limited: Shell Nederland president sees five-fold rise in oil production costs

Thursday 22 Sept 2005

AMSTERDAM (AFX) – Shell Nederland president Rein Willems said that oil production costs may rise five-fold in the near future.

He said that for Shell, the higher costs will mainly be the result of more difficult resource-gathering and refining methods as the company moves to retrieve oil from sources other than the conventional oil wells.

In an interview with Dutch engineering magazine ‘De Ingenieur’, Willems said that the higher production costs will likely lead to a stronger focus on alternative sources of energy as opposed to raw fossile fuels such as oil. read more

Rita fears raise oil prices

The Guardian (UK): Rita fears raise oil prices

“The Anglo-Dutch company Shell evacuated staff from its offices in the oil city of Port Harcourt in the Niger Delta, a region that accounts for most of Nigeria’s 2.4 million barrels a day output.”

Thursday September 22, 2005

By Mark Tran

Oil prices today rose to more than $68 (£38) a barrel amid fears that Hurricane Rita will damage oil and gas plants in Texas barely weeks after the havoc wrought by Hurricane Katrina in the New Orleans area.

Six refineries in Texas have shut down as Rita, a maximum category 5 storm with 175mph winds, bears down on the state. Rita, even more powerful than Katrina, is expected to hit Texas, home to a quarter of US refining capacity, early on Saturday.

The six closed refineries in Texas have a total daily capacity of 1.4 million barrels. Together with the four still closed in Louisiana and Mississippi after Katrina, around 14% of US refining capacity is out of action. read more
