GAZPROM has delivered its first liquefied natural gas cargo to the UK market as it expands into LNG through gas swaps, writes Martyn Wingrove.

The Russian gas monopoly supplied 140,000 cu m of LNG to BP with a delivery this week to National Grid's Isle of Grain terminal, east of London.

Gazprom bought the cargo from Gaz de France under its arrangement to swap LNG for pipeline gas deliveries from Russia.

According to National Grid, Kristin Navigation's 84,659 dwt 2005-built LNG carrier Maran Gas Asclepiusdelivered its cargo at Isle of Grain on Monday.

This was the 22nd cargo delivery at the terminal since it started receiving LNG in July last year.

Also this month the 2004-built Golar Winter delivered a cargo at the Kent terminal.

This followed the regasification plant's busiest month in March where there were five deliveries for clients BP and Algerian state group Sonatrach, including two visits by Golar Winter.

It is understood that Gazprom is lining up more LNG cargo deliveries to the UK under its agreement with Gaz de France.

The two companies started swapping gas in December last year, resulting in Gazprom delivering LNG to Shell at the Cove Point terminal in Maryland, US.
