Dutch formin told Shell to win Kazakh rights-paper
AMSTERDAM, May 6 (Reuters) – Dutch Foreign Minister Bernard Bot received a personal assurance from the Kazakh President that Royal Dutch Shell Plc would win oil exploration rights to the Nursultan block, Dutch paper De Telegraaf reported on Saturday.
President Nursultan Nazarbayev had given his word Shell could operate in the block in the south of the Kazakh sector of the Caspian Sea, the paper said, citing sources.
The Dutch Foreign Ministry was not immediately available for comment.
The paper said Shell was looking to gain a 30 percent interest in the block, but difficulties were emerging, relating to the United States.
De Telegraaf quoted Bot as saying: “It looked as if they wanted to cancel the deal and wanted to get hold of the concession themselves.”
According to the paper Bot added: “But Shell has invested enormously in Kazakhstan for four years and showed itself a loyal partner. If you win a tender, it can't be the case that the contract is granted to someone else.”
